r9-290 aftermarket cooler help

Sorry if I post this in the wrong area or if my post doesn't follow a specific set of rules, I am new here as this my first post. I was considering replacing my current gpu which is a evga 650ti 2gb ssc with a new r9-290. The only problem is I really like to overclock my products and the stock cooler is pretty underwhelming on these cards. I have built at least 4 or 5 pcs, but they all have been quite basic. So I do have some experience. I was thinking of purchasing a 290, but I wasn't exactly sure which ref model would be best this is because earlier I read some manufacturer's reference models are better to tamper with either because of warranty, price or they overclock better. So my first question is whether I should be looking for a particular brand if I want to add my own aftermarket cooler to the card?

My second question is "do the r9 - 290x and 290 basically have the same pcb because the current cooler I am looking at the VGA COOLER REV. 2 ICY VISION has the r9 - 290x listed as compatible and since the 290 is said to be the same card (size wise) and the fact that it was released recently makes me wonder if that cooler is compatible with the r9 - 290. The reason I chose that cooler is it has many positive reviews, it seems to have great or even terrific performance on a 480, comes with a kit that has everything I need to begin with and it is really cheap"

My last question is "are there any tips you guys would like to share to a first timer such as myself?" smile.gif

The Gelid Icy Vision rev2 , Arctic Accelero Xtreme III, Arctic Accelero Hybrid, and Prolimatech MK-26 all work.
The R9-290X and R9-290 have the same PCB

Do you know if Thermalright's T-RAD2 also works on R9 290/X?
