[Cinema Blend] Codemasters Removing GFWL DRM From DiRT 3

Some developers and publishers have come forward on merits of goodwill to announce that they will port or turn off the DRM in their games so that gamers will still be able to access these titles well into the future. We have a list of games switching from GFWL to Steamworks right here and DiRT 3 has been added to the list, following an exchange between a gamer and Codemasters over Twitter [via Reddit], where their official response on the matter is as follows...

Source.

The list of games linked to in the article also mentions F1 2010 and 2011, but I can't find the source for that.

Anyway, great news (people on the Twitter page are also asking for Dirt 2, count me in on that), let's hope most games get the same treatment from the respective developers. GTA IV and EFLC comes to mind.

Microsoft has 2 kind of gamers, instead of leaving them the choice to play their games on either xbox or PC. Nope, buy them twice ...

Microsoft could easily make a bridge for PC gamers and Xbox users, instead of having a collection of Xbox 360 games, make it microsoft games, compatible on both plateform via either download or both games on the same dvd.

Now we have to buy the game twice, or on Xbox then on PC when it gets out.

GFWL is dying but they could at least started with this idea in mind, it could have worked.

You mean like sony's crossbuy?

That would be nice but i doubt publishers are gonna be okay with this on any major title.

From a business perspective it makes no sense to do that. As for "having to buy a game twice"... nope

I understand what you're getting at but fail to see what it has to do with the topic at hand.

I'm just pointing out that GFWL was never needed in the first place, they should have done it so we need it. Now everyone is dropping it and microsoft ends up having created something that will go right in the abyss, once again.

Well yeah that goes without saying.
As for the whole buying games twice, no one's forcing you to buy the same game twice. Most xbox ports can be played with an xbox 360 controller on PC.

Yes, but if I want to buy GTA V on console to play it now, it would be nice to be able to continue on PC once it's released.
Anyway, I understand it's not GFWL but there should be a company that start this path and it should have been microsoft.

YES! I've never had anything against GFWL (Except not getting steam achievements, but I know LOTS of people can't even play games with GFWL) but this is great because online races will remain in tact.

Go codemasters! thumb.gifthumb.gif

EDIT: Just noticed you mentioned DiRT 2, I wasn't even going to have any hope for it, since it's older.. but if there's any possibility... drool.gif
