8800GTX Temps - Page 2

Ok, I have inserted a PCI slot exhaust fan in between the top 8800GTX (GPU1) and my X-Fi card, I have swapped the HDD fan so that it blows onto the drives, instead of sucking air away and I have spent the afternoon drilling larger holes into the top vents on the case.
Thermaltake in their wisdom put a top fan to remove hot air, good idea I thought, heat rises and all that, but then they stick a plate over it, covering the free flowing honeycombe with a 1mm hole every 10mm(ish), I have redrilled them all to 4mm holes and there is now reasonable flow, but it should still be better, maybe have another go next weekend.

See the before and after results below.

Temps listed as HDD1/HDD2/GPU2/GPU1/Core1/2/3/4/CPU Surface

Before alterations:

21/25/55/55/36/37/36/37/27 - @ Start Up (Off 8hrs)

33/38/79/75/42/42/42/42/33 - @ 30mins

As you can see my GPU's are hitting bad temps! 79c idle?!? ***?

So, altered fans, ect as above and new temps are:

22/27/50/54/40/42/40/42/32 - @ Start Up (Not Cold)

33/36/77/65/40/40/40/40/33 - @ 30mins

33/37/79/66/42/42/42/42/34 - @ 1Hr

So, I have sort of got a good result. GPU1 is down by 11c after 30mins compared with no PCI slot exhaust! The HDD is down by 2c on one, same on other. And at 30mins the CPU is 2c cooler aswell, nice! Prob due to better airflow, so the radiator can get cooler.

But, these are all results on things I was not really trying to change. I cant add a PCI slot fan to GPU2 as there is no room below it. I cant add anything above it as there is my sound card.
Shall I try to add a case fan next to the GPU's? I have just thought of that as an option while writing this, but its not a small job.... And I dont have the cash to add DD cooling to them just after xmas as its gonne cost a few hundred ££'s.

What do you suggest, why are these temps so high?? Could my sound card be affected by a 80-90c card sat next to it?

have you tried running the system with the side panel off for a while to see the temps? Give it a go and see what happens. In my armor case I removed the top molded piece and replaced the fan with a Tt "silent cat" 90mm fan. This fan is good for this setup because it has a slotted body and draws air from all around it. It made about a 2c difference in overall temps.

Take off the stock cooler, and re-apply it with some AS5, and check out the airflow in your case, is the fan running as full speed?
Who told you that? ManDown, your temps are perfectly fine. Load temps on the G80 should just be under 100C. Call any tech support line and they'll tell you about the same.

Really? That makes me feel better, do you think the X-Fi card will be ok next to it?

Think I will look at the top fan as suggested and look at a side fan on the GPU area as I have a young son who would love to get his hands in there!

Also, why are they so much higher than others with same cards. They seem to idle in the 50'sc on average?
