Need Suggestions on a basic HTPC For My Living Room

Hey guys,
I'm trying to get some opinions on parts for a Small Form Factor HTPC that can blend nicely with my Home Theater Receiver and BluRay player. I need something that can stream video without a hiccup. I'm building a new system since my old HTPC can't keep up with the audio and video processing. I'm getting rid of an amd athlon 64 x2 4200+.... I know its ancient lol... But this is what I was thinking about going with, kinda seems like major overkill for what I am wanting it to do though...

Looks solid to me. Only problem I see is that the case is so perforated that you might hear fan noise if that cooler ramps all the way up, but on the plus side it's a high quality fan so you might be safe. I'm assuming that processor doesn't run hot. I have a phenom ii in my HTPC that I'm getting ready to upgrade. It's in a small space with my receiver and has a tough time keeping cool, which ramps up fans which in turn creates noise. Going with a cube shaped case next time. Those pancake builds are tough.

yeah i thought about a closed loop water cooled with low rpm silent fans but don't really think water cooling is necessary since i'm not planning on overclocking or planning on doing any really crazy gaming so processor shouldn't get too hot with low fan settings
post #4 of 9
I thought the same thing and mounted a Kuhler 620 to the outside of my case (wouldn't fit inside). Yes it's quieter than the OE cooler but no, still not as quiet as I'd want it to be if it was in the same room as where I was watching TV. Stock fan on the 620 though, so that might be some of it. I think if you can keep it cool enough with a low fan setting you will be golden.

If all you're doing is streaming netflix and the like, that processor is waaaay overkill. Ive been using an A4-3400 (2.7ghz dual core) to stream HD Netflix full screen for a while now, never a hicup. It also runs so cool, that Noctua probably wont ever spin up, aleviating your noise concerns.

Now, if you're looking to decode 10GB blue ray backups from the hard drive, from what I understand that might be a different story. I'm still not sure of the rendering capabilities of the new APU's.

I just did a very similar system that we use for HTPC and as my Wife's desktop machine.

We used the A10-6800K as well. I have it on stock cooling as I am still looking for a cooler that will clear the RAM and fit the case and mount the proper direction for the prodigy case but that said. The Stock cooler runs quiet when the machine is only being used to play media, so that's a non-issue. It does get noisy when playing games. Under a load it is a hot running chip if left to run defaults all around on stock cooling. I found that the chip runs stable under-volted, and as such, ramps up the fan much less often and runs a lot cooler for it. With the big cooler you will have a lot more flexibility but I think it's still worth noting that auto-voltage may be quite a bit more than the chip needs to run stock speeds.

At the time we built ours, the next step up of 2133 ripjaws was also on promo special ( http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231689 ) <<< That stuff will run 2400-10-11-11@1.66V on the Richland chip on the GA-Wifi board just fine. I did a series of GPU benchmarks and found a worthwhile increase in performance pushing the speed to 2400.

Right now, I think this may be a better value for your build: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231667 (lower price, higher profiled speeds).

I'd be concerned that the SFX PSU selected there could become a source of noise, perhaps not while the machine is just playing media, but if noise is an important concern all around, a compact PSU with a small fan and lower efficiency (than ideal) will tend to have to run noisier to keep cool. When the CPU is running hard (near TDP) you can expect that little fan in the PSU to have to dissipate ~25-40W. If it were me, I would try to work out a case selection that would take a traditional ATX PSU so that I could use one of the entry level gold rated units with a 120mm or larger fan. (FSP, Capstone, etc)

You can underclock/undervolt the CPU in the HTPC to make it run cooler, as these processors are way overkill for an HTPC in general, unless of course you're playing games or encoding media on it as well.

My old Athlon II in an AM2 board does just fine with 1080p MKV files.

Not sure if OP pulled the trigger. But I have two 2 comments.

1. The PSU might be too big for the build because of the protruding top fan. There are alternatives, for example.

2. Silverstone will be releasing the ML06 around mid December, which is identical to the ML05 but with a brushed aluminum front and possibly without the logo. Should look nicer than reflective plastic. The button aesthetics and placement might be changed as well.

I have that same Gigabyte board (GA-F2A88XN-WIFI). Bought the NH-L9a cooler as well but it does not fit the board. The RAM slot is too close to the CPU socket and the cooler needs about 2mm more space without hitting the RAM module.
