I need a new SSD

Thread Starter
I guess I should explain myself before I rant.

When I purchased my PC parts almost a full 7 months ago, I was caught between a battle of Samsung or OCZ. I took OCZ, Figuring the Vector would have its controller squared away and I gave it a chance. For 5 1/2 months I enjoyed the fastest drive I've ever worked with. Windows booted in seconds, game loading times were non existant, and I thoroughly was confident in the safety of it.

Then it happened... The First time.

My SSD crashed without any prior failure warnings in the middle of a Wargame match. I lost hundreds of hours of data in work because I had never chosen to back it up.

So I got a new one. Warranty proved correct and they sent me a Refurbished... I got skeptical but figured why not.

My SSD has been getting Corrupt Disk errors for the past week. I've backed up everything I can in spite of this and I'm praying I can hold out until the warranty information is fixed.

When people said that OCZ SSD's had a shorter lifespan, I figured it was only a slight problem. I figured it would never happen to me, because I'd be lucky. 3 Failures in 7 months is NOT lucky.

The point of this paragraph is to affirm my stance with OCZ. Never again.

And I also need a new SSD. 256GB Preferred, I heard The 840 Pro is pretty good.

Any input?

Hello, been there done that =3

tryed OCZ, and switched over to Intel 520, and Samsung ssd's now (currently testing out a Kingston hyperX 3k ssd, for 4 months now it has worked splended and are about the same speed as it was when it was new with alot of read/write.

I always try to have everything backed up, since when an ssd dies its dead.

I would recommand Intel or Samsung, as i dont have that much experiance with Kingston tho nothing bad to say about the Kingston ssd.

I personaly would go for a Samsung ssd for my next buy, and would get the 840 pro 500GB or an Intel 500GB drive, since 120GB was to small for me and now 256GB is to small. and if you dont fill it up then it will last longer, since less read/write pr cell (more free cells since not in use)

Samsung ssd 840 evo 250GB
-Internal transfer speed 540MBps read / 520MBps write
-4 KB -derect read - 97000 IOPS
-4 KB -derect write - 66000 IOPS
-warrenty 3years
-TLC
Samsung ssd 840 pro
-Internal transfer speed 540 MBps read / 520 MBps write
-4 KB -derect read - 100000 IOPS
-4 KB -derect write - 90000 IOPS
-warrenty 5 years
-MLC?
Intel ssd 520 Series 240GB
- Internal transfer speed 550 MBps read / 520 MBps write
-4 KB -derect read - 50000 IOPS
-4 KB -derect write - 60000 IOPS
-warrenty 5 years
-MLC

Some would say that MLC will last longer and what not then TLC, and i dont really think that has to much to say as ssd's will last pritty long (depending on use)

Hope some of that i wrote was usable, if not feel free to ask, and i will check back in tomorrow after some sleep and coffee smile.gif

My SSD purchases:

OCZ Agility 32 gb $45 in 2008
Samsung 840 250 $170 in 2012
Samsung 840 250 $150
Adata Premiere Pro SP900 128 gb $90
Samsung 840 250 EVO $153

I have a Samsung 840 250 gig with TLC that is a year old with no crashes. I have another Samsung 840 250 that is 9 or 10 months old that my wife uses DAILY in her laptop. I just bought a Samsung 840 250 EVO for my sig rig. So far i've had zero issues with samsung.

The OCZ Agility was purchased new and in 2 or 3 months had to be sent in due to it crashed and wouldn't be recognized in 2 systems I had at the time. Then they sent it back and it worked but was never happy with it nor trusted it.

I learned from my Adata that SSDs are all generally the same speed except in benches (my system with the Adata feels as responsive as the Samsung drives) so I would go with the lowest cost drive from a reputable manufacture. For my main rig i'd stick with samsung or intel

Sorry to hear about the data loss.
I once had an OCZ Diesel 16 GB flash drive.
It eventually became corrupted despite babying it and always ejecting it properly.
Since then OCZ has been on my blacklist of brands that I will never purchase again.

Anyway, as far as reliability goes, Intel, Crucial, Samsung and Plextor stand out.
The higher end Intel and Plextor drives (520, 530, M5 Pro, etc) have 5 year warranties but you pay an hefty premium for it.
