Mantle was created to allow games and applications that utilize the GPU more efficiently, and have much faster draw calls. I hear it's like the old Glide that Voodoo graphics cards used to use.

No there won't be an api that have low level access to the hardware from nvidia like mantle, mantle is designed to unlock the potential of a specific hardware, GCN architecture the same architecture as the upcoming consoles by implementing the low level coding that the devs have already done on consoles easily to the PC with the same architecture if iam not mistaken, in nvidia's case it's impossible to take advantage of low level access coding that the devs have put on consoles version because it lacks the hardware for it to take advantage of it, unless the devs program the code specifically for nvidia hardware which won't happen because it's too expensive.

I voted no, but I can easily be wrong. It just sounds too time intensive for everyone involved. Something we don't need for games imho.
But I do think that AMD Mantle will LOOK pretty strong when they release it soon. Not because it is strong, but at the moment I have the feeling that AMD is holding back with BF4. The fps numbers don't look convincing to me. For example the 290X CF results from Hardcop for Battlefield 4. It gets easily beaten by 780 Ti SLI at that particular game. All other games are very close and in some games the 290X CF even delivers more fps.
I think when Mantle hits with BF the AMD performance, especially the 290(X), will magically increase fps by a 2 digit amount, but I think it has more to do with AMD holding back at the moment for BF4 rathern than absolute MANTLE optimization.

Mantle is very close to the D2M that consoles use, so there's less abstraction when porting.

NVIDIA has had a low-level API since 2008. doh.gif

So the poll needs an option for -5 years.....

Exactly, and a lot of game developers already make use of it.
