For every person with your experience you will find someone with the opposite experience. I have never had an issue with an AMD/ATI card but had lost of issues with nVidia based cards ranging from hardware failure to driver glitches.

Radeon R9-290 @ 399 + Waterblock shouldn't be on that list (about $500)

It's in a different pricebracket.

That said unless you're using your R9-290 for GPGPU then you need either a 120+hz 1080p monitor (2x pixels) or eyefinity (3x pixels) for it to be worth buying... R9 290 series was made for 4K resolution (4x pixels of 1080p)

1440p = 1.78x the pixels of 1080p , so a 120Hz 1440p (3.56x pixels 60hz 1080p) is about right at 4K res.

---

I have a ten+ year ATI radeon 9000 series that still works (10+years), my brother bought an EVGA Nvidia 8000 series and had it crap out in less than a year

Brand loyalty confounds me . Buy what's worth the money.

If you're willing to give up an MSI / Gigabyte 3 year warranty you can gamble on a Powercolor R9 290 unlocking to R9 290X

ASUS is not that great warranty (so many RMA horror stories) but it is also 3 years. HIS/Sapphire/Powercolor/XFX are 2 years

Its been done. It takes a lot of work and is usually found not worth it.

Its usually done by Red Team that want PhysX and idk if it can be done anymore with newer cards.
