Dxtory poor performance?

Thread Starter
Hey guys, I'm trying to film more footage for a Skyrim mod project I've helped work on. In the past I've used Fraps, but that left such a large footprint and was very taxing on my system. A friend told me to try Dxtory out since some of the codecs are much less taxing. So I bought it and tried out the default codecs. They were awful. Every one besides Dxtory video codec and Cinepak codec crashed my game as soon as I hit capture, and these two weren't so fps friendly either.

I did some more ressearch, and I tried two more codecs, x264vfw and Lagarith Lossless. Both are known more apparently being less performance heavy and leaving such a large file footprint. I tried the YV12 mode for Lagarith and it made my game super jittery, almost like some really bad microstutter while using Crossfire. x264vfw isn't as jittery, but it's just as taxing. For instance, I get 60-150 fps in Skyrim depending on where I am. In this particular spot where I filmed, I was getting 110-130. As soon as I hit record it dipped down to the 20's, and this is the result:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/33700986@N07/10823616463/

It's strange. It doesn't look so bad in the video, but it's borderline unplayable in game.

I want to use this codec, because the video sizes are very low, but I'm not sure why my framerates are dipping so low. It's not like I have a bad machine (see below). Here are some pictures of my settings that I coped off another user. If there is anything wrong there, that would explain it. But if that all looks okay, how or what can I do to make Dxtory less taxing?

Here are my settings:

Thanks a lot for the help!

Dunno, never used Dxtory but I tried out FRAPS it was too taxing on the system and required too much data space for such poor quality video. Try out PlayClaw, I used to use it while raiding online. It's a lot less taxing than FRAPS.

I use Dxtory Video Codec and medium quality and have no problems whatsoever with peformance. At most takes like ~2% CPU usage.

The codec I use for capturing games is UTVideo. Lagarith is more for browser or old games, like Doom.

You stated you're using cross-fire. One of the options in advanced settings is 'enabled multi-gpu fix code'. Try enabling that. If that doesn't work, then force CPU processing.

Now, for troubleshooting basics. What resolutions are you capturing? Are you saving the file to the HDD or SSD in your system? What is the write speed of both storage devices? (dxtory has a benchmark to run at the folder settings tab - third one from left side). What is the bitrate of the capture files? (You can download media info lite to easily view this information in windows)

Also, x264 a lossy codec which requires far more systems processing resources than lossless codecs such as lagarith/utvideo/dxtory in YUV12 as it uses far more compression. The term used to describe codec compression is efficiency. An example would be that h.265 is twice the efficiency of h.264. Being twice as efficient also entails requiring twice as much processing power to encode by comparison.

Now, Lagarith, UTvideo, and other 'lossless' codec do utilize some compression, but they are, pixel for pixel, identical to the footage being captured if, and only if, it was already in the same color space and chroma! These codecs are far more reliant on HDD write speed. If the HDD your are writing to is actively used by the game or OS then it won't operate at 100%. Dedicated an entire HDD to capture for optimal performance. Ideally, this HDD should have a sustained write speed of at least 100MB/s.

Now, the amount of data being written depends on the content being captured. So, in order of affect, 60fps has twice the bitrate of 30fps content, of course. Resolution has similar scaling in bitrate. Color detail( the amount of colors on-screen and their saturation) and how quickly the camera is moving further increase bitrate. One of the reasons to capture in YUV12(4:2:0 chroma) is due to its lower bitrate and the fact that youtube only streams in 4:2:0. Something like that RGB32 capture 1080@60fps will require multiple HDDs in Raid 0!

So, if you're running multiple mods for textures, the bitrate will be higher than vanilla. If you're using ENB, another increase in data requirements. In addition, I remember ENB and DXtory not getting along very well. I'm remembering the 'delayed start' function is necessary to get Dxtory working with ENB running.

While this is indeed a long read, I hope it'll give you a better understanding of what is going on and what needs to be done to resolve any future issues. For the one you're currently having I'm happy to answer any further questions.

You might also wish to consider unparking your cores: http://www.overclock.net/t/1439672/want-to-increase-bf4-frames-unpark-your-cores. In addition, Skyrim is known for terrible CPU utilization. You may need to go into the bios and disable some settings in order to prevent your processor from underclocking.

use this one, best compression for like an hour i heard it will make about 24-28gigs and gives 1080p high quality
