HTPC controller suggestions?

Thread Starter
Hi Guys,

I'm converting my sig rig to an all in one htpc. I'm putting windows 8.1 on it so i can do all the home theatre stuff plus games with steam big screen mode.

I want to have a simple controller interface to control everything, my first idea was to use a ps3 controller with a keypad, have the joysticks mapped to mouse functions.

like you see here, but Im having trouble getting the bluetooth to pair,

So i was thinking the wireless 360 controller might be better, anyone have advice or ideas on controller interfaces? I'm pretty open to various ideas. I want this to be something wireless that I can do from the couch though.

I think just a plain old wireless keyboard/mouse setup with optional 360 controller would suit all of your needs. The keyboard and mouse can easily be stored in a coffee table or slipped under the couch. I could never get used to the keypads that attach to a wireless controller. They always seem to be in the way of my pad playing style.

I use the Logitech Wireless Touch Keyboard K400 (picked it up at walmart super cheap) along with a 360 controller for games. It work great. Also picked up a HP Media Center Receiver and programmed my harmony to use it for media center functions.

Exactly this. I use a small keyboard with a trackball on it that is easily storable. I have a wireless 360 controller for gaming. I use an infared remote designed for Media Center for controlling that and XBMC. Just can't see an all in one solution working well for all of that and those are all easily hidden devices when not in use.

PS Mercyflush64 your avatar is disturbing. Funny, but disturbing!

I don't know if it is sad or a good thing that most people in this day don't recognize who it even is. I'm old enough to remember when it all happened.

I was a senior in college at the time and the events sure scared the bejeezus out of me. Made my decision to go to Indiana for grad school quite a bit easier.

I use two controllers, the logitech f710 (for dpad games) and the xbox 360 controller. For 90% of my htpc functions these do everything I need. In addition to that I have a generic universal remote that issued keyboard presses to the PC via a Flirc. On that remote I have certain keys mapped to keypresses that are cuaght by WinHotKey which runs scripts when they are pressed. (One button for my steam password, another closes all active windows and starts xbmc. I think the best remote to get though is a harmony remote, paired with an RC6 receiver.
