Why do developers outsource to other companies for porting to PC?

Thread Starter 
As in, Injustice for PC, for one example.

Netherrealm made it initally, but High Voltage Software is doing the porting to PC/PS4... i'm just curious why NR and similar companies don't do the porting themselves... and will porting be easier now that the next gen is x86 based like PC is?

probably costs less to have another studio do it than their own...

or, their studio is busy squashing bugs that arise, or things that SHOULD HAVE BEEN FIXED before launch.

Another team may have more experience on the target system....
Another team may be cheaper.... creating a game is much much harder than porting one.
You rather have your A-team work on a new project or bug fix.
You already fired or reassigned the dev team.

Note, these are the same reasons why you might see a different studio make a DLC or full "sequel" to a game.

Yes, porting will be easier since consoles are now x86.

It's also easier to convert code than write a new application from scratch. So it's more profitable to farm out the porting to a cheaper (and often lower-skill) development team while your own talent comes up with the next great thing.

Yup.... With games, it's not even just the code.... the artwork, music, story, gameplay, network, etc. It takes a pretty good team to manage all those other other aspects. That team's time is better spent working on the things that only they can do.

ah... is there any details on how they go about converting the code? like going from PS3 Cell or Xenon to x86 and back?

It's complicated.

In the ideal world, everything is portable so you do nothing except make sure all the referenced files/libraries are in the right place.
In a less ideal world, you just have to recompile make sure all the referenced files/libraries are in the right place.

In the real-world, you recompile... bug fix.... test... bug fix.... optimize.... yell at vendor for a properly working library... optimize.... bug fix.... bug fix.... test... bug fix.... test... bug fix.... bug fix.... bug fix.... test... optimize.... bug fix....bug fix.... test... test.... test... test... test... test... test... test... test...


I had to move code from AIX Unix to Linux.... and that took something like 6 months with minimal code changes (Java + Perl + scripts).
