Does GPU (780ti) model matter if OCing with water anyway?

Thread Starter
I'm currently debating between 2x 780 vs 2x 780ti in my new build. Part of the debate is cost and which model 780 or 780ti to get. Most likely sticking with EVGA as I've used them almost exclusively in the past.

So my main question is:

Does it matter which version of the GPU I buy if i'm taking the stock fans off, watercooling, and overclocking myself?

So can i get a base card instead of a factory superclocked one? And save a few bucks?

Example
EVGA 03G-P4-2881-KR GeForce GTX 780 Ti 3GB 384-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 SLI Support Video Card (699.99)
vs
EVGA 03G-P4-2883-KR GeForce GTX 780 Ti Superclocked 3GB 384-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 SLI Support Video Card (729.99)

Can I buy the cheaper card and expect to OC it just as far as the factory SC one?

I don't want to sound cheap, just trying to be a little more frugal since my build is way over budget already.

Most of the time yes they will perform the same but the higher one is guaranteed to be stable at those clocks.
Also, a 780 destroys the 780ti in price/perf.

The Standard version may not be radomly good when you try to overclock it, or you may get a golden chip and overclock it more than should do, if you pick the SC you have the certain that you know ill overclock till a determinate range without problem but anyway, I don´t think it worths it

I would get the normal ones, it doesnt worth 40 more bucks thumb.gif

BTW: Why 32 Gigs of RAM? With actual pricesyoull need to sell your two kidneys to afford it lol

Oh, absolutely the 780 is a better 'deal'. Which is why my original plan was 780s. Also why I went 4930K instead of the 4960X. But now that I'm almost done I am seriously considering the 780ti instead.

But it kinda sounds like buying the factory SC cards is just a little bit more insurance that the cards I buy will perform. Even though I could get lucky and get a stable OCable base model. Ugh, decisions. biggrin.gif

Mostly just to say I have 32GB lol. Will probably bump it to 64GB at some point. Once again just because the board will do it.

Choosing by brand name is a fool's errand in the sense that the various products in any given line are very different. I'll take an EVGA Classified any day by the SC series has no point. It's a factory overclocked card that other than the cooler is all reference .... the same price competition from Asus, Gigabyte and MSI all use custom PCBs and beefed up VRMs on their cards (talking 78's now, haven't seen these products w/ Ti) .....so the question then becomes, do you want the stock PCBN and VRMs or the beefier ones ? If the waterblocks are different, then it's a safe bet that that model has a custom PCB.

The only think is after paying the extra bucks, you are guaranteed that the card will hit the number ..... and good luck with that. Been there done that w/ EVGA..... 20 support calls, 5 RMAs and 18 months later they finally replaced the factory OC'd card with a stock card from the next generation.

So now getting you your question.... other than the "arduous to enforce guarantee", it makes absolutely no sense to take the SC version as, if history holds, it is identical to the reference version except for the cooler that you are going to take that off. On the water bloclk, all things being equal outside the silicon lottery, the SC gets you nothing. The EVGA Classified and MSI Lightning will give you the tools necessary for extreme overclocking with voltage adjustment .... The Gigabyte Asus DCII OC, Windforce, and MSI N series give you a custom PCB and beefed up VRMs to stand up to those bigger ocverclocks where the SC doesn't do that.

Cool, thank you. I'm thinking of waiting for the 780ti Classifieds now. Looks like i'll be waiting on Koolance to get a waterblock out for the ti's anyway. So might as well grab the better cards. smile.gif

When are custom ti's scheduled for release?

They're not..... that's what we all speculating about .... when and if they will arrive and if they will require different blocks is all conjecture at this point....at least I haven't seen anything but rumor and speculation.
