What is a good AMD PC upgrade for my little brother? - Page 2

GPU upgrade YES

try to solve the RAM problem, could be a settings issue in BIOS. Make sure you're treating everything with speeds/timings/voltages of the worst common denominator and as already mentioned, ganged mode, unganged mode, other settings with proprietary naming conventions are worth exploring to make sure that the motherboard is currently set to support hybrid dual channel behavior necessary to support different size and odd numbers of chips.

Beyond that, nothing really

Well, I believe there is three thing that might have cause it.
One. His RAM is now in triple channel in 4 RAM slot, so it might cause a problem or not. Correct me if I am wrong.
Second. His RAM's speed/type/etc aren't the same to each other.
Finally. His OS is 32-bit rather 64-bit.

Would it cause any problem if you have 3 RAM sticks in a 4 RAM slots?

If his OS is 32-bit then just take out the 4Gb stick, it's doing nothing but make the RAM run in single channel mode.

For right now, the 2x2gb is the best you can do.

For the GPU, I decide maybe buy my own GPU (ATI Radeon HD 7870) or maybe two of them to do Xfire then give my GTX 560 ti his PC.
However, I might need to upgrade his CPU because I believe his CPU is a bit outdated.

Anyone know what is a good CPU for him. Nothing too fancy or pricey.

And also give him my Corsair CX600 and in return I'll get the Corsair 750W

There is no such thing as triple channel on this platform. The memory controller supports dual channel, and as with all dual channel controllers, they will use any RAM available on the bus in dual channel mode that is physically configured as such, and then move down to single channel speeds for all RAM that falls outside of the symmetry required to maintain dual channel speeds.

In a dual channel system on a motherboard with 4 slots, the lowest common denominator of symmetry in a pair of slots that share the same "channel" will work in dual channel mode, all RAM that falls outside of this symmetry is still accessible at single channel speeds.

This does not matter as you should be manually taking control of the speeds/timings and forcing all of the RAM to operate at a lowest common denominator of voltage and speed and timings. In this case I would advise just setting everything to 1333-9-9-9 speeds and 1.5-1.65V depending on what the mobo and chips support (some AMD boards from back then wouldn't go below 1.6V).

Finally. His OS is 32-bit rather 64-bit.

This is what is causing the problem.

actually there is single channel mode duel channel more ganged mode and unganged mode also depending on the motherboard and CPU having 3 ram sticks can cause problems in my experience Amd prefers duel channel and on some boards it will cause the system to not post not have duel channel ram normally having 3 sticks causes the issues if his system is 64 bit and it still only sees 3 gigs of ram i would have to say there is a problem with one of his BIOS settings i would look to see that he has it set to unganged mode not sure if his CPU supports ganged and unganged mode but i would check to see if it is set to unganged which is normally best setting to use also i would check and make sure hybrid crossfire is disabled that can use 4 gigs of ram iv seen it happen before and also i would check and make sure the BIOS itself can see all 3 sticks he has installed
