i would disagree a bit. I take Vanilla to include no mods, in which case, obviously random crits and spread removal mods are a huge improvement. Kritz adds nice strategy to the game. Then equalizer before it was nerfed contributed to making the mid fights a bit more interesting and is just a good overall buff to the soldier who was a little weak compared to scouts and demoman. Then you could argue about many items for the off classes that could make them get played a little more often. So i definitely think TF2 was improved upon from vanilla for competitive setting quite a bit.
Then best comp shooter ever? I kind of think Quake has to take that title. TF2 does still have some problems. Like stalemates, the medic being a bit too easy to play, many classes being too weak and class composition being too set, and 6v6 is a bit large imo. TF2 does have a bit going for it though, like movement can be challenging and rewarding, the 4 main comp classes require very different skill sets and play very differently, there is a good deal of strategy and tactics, because of the different strengths and tactics of the different classes, a lot of the strategy can easily be conveyed to the audience. A mix of TF2 and quake might be the best possible. TF2 is kind of like starcraft 2, the spectator sees the build, sees the unit placement, and can understand what each side is setting up for and planning. In Quake, its a mind game that the audience misses out on: he's going to think i'm going this way so i'm going to go this other way, unless he thinks about me thinking that he thinks i'm going that way.
