Matrox GPU and Nvidia Geforce GPU in the same system - does it work?

Hello OCN members,

To support all the additional screens I want to add to my rig I am in need of a simple yet powerful enough card to run at least 4 monitors on. To sum up my plans for reference;
Nvidia Geforce 780GTX:
- Dell U3011 and Mitsubishi HC5500 (possibly SLI in the future)

multi monitor card
- 4 x Dell U2211H

Future, but for now not important addition will be 2 x Dell 2007FP for sure on the side, and another 4 x Dell U2211H.

The Multimonitor card being the issue right now;
I expect the card to run Media without issue, think of programs like MPC-HC with custom filters and Flash media. It has to be passive and have at least 4 HD compatible outputs with plenty of Vram for each monitor.

I have experience running a Quadro 580 together with different types of Geforce cards-- this works fine. Initially I was looking at a Quadro NVS 450. These however are quite expensive to purchase new due to the availability, and I haven't been able to find any second handed in the past few months.

A Matrox card with 4 or more monitors however... I found someone selling a perfect example; Matrox M9148 LP

I am not entirely sure whether a Matrox card would work well? With this I mean the stability, performance, compatability and such.
Looking it up on google, I can't find any recent information about combining a Geforce with Matrox card.

Does any of you perhaps have experience with running Matrox cards alongside other brands?

Thank you for your input!

The quadro will work, because it is basically just a downclocked consumer card with ecc memory and better drivers. I suspect you will find that the quadro will run well only with consumer nvidia cards it is similar to. You need the same base model of card to connect to. You can do a 7950 and a 7970, but You can't for example crossfire a 6950 and a 7850, or a gtx480 and a 660ti. You most certainly can't do it with one nvidia card and one amd card. The matrox is a third brand entirely, and I don't believe they even interconnect with each other at all.

Can you run both cards at once? Probably. There is very little reason to do it though. You will get no memory or desktop sharing at all. The cards run totally seperately, and you cannot have one program displaying on multiple monitors. The best you could do is have, say, a movie running on one card, with your desktop on the other.

If this IS all you are interested in doing, running different programs on different monitors, you can stick whatever you want to in there.

You could use the matrox and attach it to all 4 monitors and use it alone. You would get cross desktop functionality. i don't know if the result would be what you want though. It will drive the monitors, but if you need floating point acceleration you may find it lacking.

The big question here is what exactly are you going to use this system FOR. It is very possible that you have no use at all for enterprise cards, or that a consumer grade card would be useless to you.

for the money of a single matrox though you could get two consumer grade 770s in SLI and probably blow it;s doors off. It depends on what kind of work you are doing though. Some CUDA features are locked out of consumer cards by the gimped drivers.
