MSI graphics card RMA went well

Just figured I would put out my positive experience in dealing with the MSI RMA process. There are plenty out there which are horror stories, which worried me at first.

My 7970 Lightning crapped out on me a day prior to the initial RMA request. No video at all, and the fan would speed up to 100% upon start up and would stay there.

I initiated the RMA on a Sunday, and the next day (Monday) I got an approval via email from MSI.

I shipped it that day, slow and cheap so the package didn't arrive to MSI until the following Monday.

Checking their RMA status page almost every day, within three business days the card was verified as broken and a replacement was shipped to me via UPS.

It then took about four business days to show up on my doorstep.

From me shipping out on 10/28, the replacement card showed up on 11/11.

So, in total, I was out of a card for about two weeks. Great turnaround time from MSI. If I had shipped it there faster it would have easily been the next week after shipment considering the weekends added time for the package to get to and from.

The best part about it was the replacement card was in pretty good condition. It was obviously refurbished, that being very clear on the MSI RMA policy. Nothing crazy, aesthetically it looked fine but the vrm/memory heat sink looked like it had been scratched a bit from the refurbish.

I got lucky on the performance of the card too. The one I sent in had an ASIC quality of 56%, and the highest overclock I could get from it was 1200mhz core using 1.31 volts. The replacement card has an ASIC quality of 74%, getting that same overclock but only using 1.2 volts. It doesn't respond very well to 1300mhz and 1.3+ volts, once it hits 60-70C it starts to artifact .It's already plenty of performance for me.

All in all, great experience with MSI. The only thing I would say wasn't to my liking was the exorbitant amount of thermal compound on the die. But that's to be expected from any graphics card company I guess. Cleaned it up a bit and the temps are a bit better.

Not trying to be an MSI fanboy, just wanted to put out a good word for their hard work.

Yeah, I didn't have a problem with them either. I bought a brand new MSI card from somewhere on the internet and it came DOA. Shipped it out and got a replacement no problem. The card didn't look used either, probably because the card was barely released out. That was the only DOA brand new graphics card that I ever dealt with.
