Upgrading from 6990 to 290x

Thread Starter
Hey all its been awhile since I have posted. I have had my trusty 6990 since release yet the itch to upgrade has been tempting. My question is do you guys think it would be worth moving to a 290x right now? My main reasons would be for mantle support and the price of the card is not an issue. I will be building a new x79 rig later in December so I am not worried about any system bottlenecks. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

I personally think it will be a great upgrade for you since you won't have to deal with problems with crossfirex microstutter etc. and have a nice FPS boost. The only thing I would do right now if I was personally getting a 290x or 290 card is wait for aftermarket coolers instead of stock since the stock cooler on that card is not that good at cooling the card.

^^ Agree with above post. If you must upgrade, wait for aftermarket coolers to be outfitted to the 290/290X

Although stock cooler is not as bad as some people claim (you can crank up the fan speed at the expense of noise to cool the card down).

However, if you are happy with the performance of the 6990, I see no reason to upgrade with a single monitor.

Wait until DDR4 is released before buying a new mobo and CPU, should be soon. I would recommend waiting for a non-reference cooler to be released unless you plan on watercooling.

I am in a very similar situation, in the transition between an Intel i7 920 and 6970 crossfire system to a mini-itx rig inside a bitfenix prodigy using 3570k and a R9 290x.

My 290x gets here tomorrow with about $750 of watercooling components taking their sweet ass time. Whole thing should be up and running next weekend.

BF4 started to expose the age of my old system at 2560x1080 so I'm ready to get back to 60+ fps with the 290x.

Yea I definitely plan on putting the card under water. A few months ago I picked up the Arctic Cooling replacement for my 6990 at a very nice price but this work horse is showing its age.

I went from 2 x 6850's at 900\1125 and the 290x stock beats them hands down!

Well the order for the 290x has been placed and I am quite excited. Now I am curious to what the resale value of my 6990 with Accelero Twin Turbo is.
