Laptop will not boot

Thread Starter
I was given a laptop to look at. After doing some testing I saw the hard drive needed replacing. I gave the person the laptop back and said what needs doing. About a week later they gave me the money to buy a hard drive and gave me the laptop back. Before I replaced the old hard drive with the new one I did not check if the laptop was still booting up. As it was booting up the last time I had it I just assumed that side of things was ok. I replaced the hard drive and then went to boot up the laptop. It won't boot. It's dead as a dodo.

Now I know if I go back to the person whose laptop it is and say it now won't switch on I will get the dreaded "Well it was switching on when I gave it to you...................."

I am going to borrow a multimeter tomorrow to check the external power supply is ok. Is there anything on the motherboard I could check with the multimeter in regards to the laptop not powering on?

Can anybody please suggest ideas of things to check. So far I tried taking the battery out and holding the power button for 30 seconds and the putting battery back and trying again. I have also tried leaving the battery out for 15 minutes and then putting it back in.

What brand and model laptop?

You're starting in the right place though. Got to make sure the AC adapter is providing power, and subsequently that the battery is charging/charged.

Many laptops have a charge indicator light that comes on when the AC adapter is connected to the AC port on the laptop. Does this laptop have an indicator light, and if so does it light up when the AC adapter is connected?

It's an Asus X53S. I do get a green light on the power adapter. Doe that mean the power adapter is ok?

I cannot see a charge indicator on the laptop itself.

I know for sure that the X53S has an onboard LED light that illuminates. Red when charging, green when full and various combinations of blinking / orange when it is doing other things.

Try removing the battery (leave it out)
Connect the AC cord to the laptop and wall socket
Attempt to turn on the laptop

Will it turn on?

No it still will not turn on even with the battery out and just the power supply connected.

Unfortunately that isn't a good sign.................

You might remove the new hard drive that you installed and put the old one back in - see if there is a problem with the new hard drive causing the "no power' condition. I don't know what it would be, but I guess that it's possible.

Hopefully whomever you were doing this favor for isn't going to be a bitty about it.
