I have done a ton of Googling and trying different things but am still having a hard time wrapping my head around the whole DNS setup thing.

Here is my current setup:
  • Registered a domain through GoDaddy.com
  • Running Ubuntu server on an old box of mine
  • RT-AC66U is my router
  • DDNS service registered with [example].asuscomm.com - connecting to this domain works but I want to use the domain I bought
  • Various ports forwarded (80 for HTTP being the key one)
  • Dynamic IP from ISP

Every time my ISP changes my IP I have to go into my zone file for GoDaddy and change the A record to the new IP. Obviously this is a poor solution since you never know when your ISP will change the IP and making changes to a zone file can take 2 hours to propagate. This process is also manual.

I have tried pointing my A record to the my registered DDNS at [example].asuscomm.com however you are only able to enter an IP for the A record so this doesn't work.
I have tried changing my name servers in the zone file to ns1.asuscomm.com and ns2.asuscomm.com however this doesn't work either. How would ns1/2.asuscomm.com know which domain it is supposed to forward to?
I have tried adding [example].asuscomm.com to the name servers in addition to the default ones provided by GoDaddy, this did not work.

This isn't a particularly robust system and doesn't have a huge amount of traffic, I basically just host a few services/games for a groups of friends. It would just be nice if my domain from GoDaddy wasn't rendered useless every time my IP changes until I get around to updating it and waiting a couple hours.

I read about setting up DNS within Ubuntu server however I am not sure how you would set up the zone file to point to it since it would be on the same server behind a dynamic IP in my case.

Would anyone be able to break this down for me?
