In what may be my last foray into using integrated graphics (again, intel HD 4600) on this TV, I realized that directX 9 works with it but directX 11 does not. DirectX 9 would, in fullscreen mode, successfully change the resolution (to 4k at 30hz or 1080 at 60hz), while 11 would continually fail to do so with nonstop blanking.

I picked up a cheap 280, figuring I'd copy you in going the AMD route since you're the most successful with this monitor. Ha!

Benchmarks are good, showing about 7-10x more FPS than the integrated was getting, including 120 fps on some simple games which looks pretty damn good. (Integrated ain't bad though!)

I immediately got 1920x1080x120 working, on the exact same hdmi cable as showed snow in 120 hz with integrated. Applied the pixel patcher and went into the registry and added 2560x1440 and 3200x1800. Both look okay, but not really better than 1080. I used CRU to edit the refresh rates.

However there are problems. One, there is a 297 mhz pixel clock limit, but even things like 1080x120 hz (348 mhz) claim to be above this. Is this because of the back porch or blanking settings in CRU? What should I set those to?

Second, games don't seem to be able to correctly change resolution. If I change my monitor from 2160 to 1080 in the CCC menu on the desktop, the desktop goes into 1920x1080x120. If I then open a game it's in this resolution. But if I set in-game to be at 1080 then it changes the game resolution but not the video card resolution, so it's still sending to the TV in 3840x2160x30. (Overall I think 1080 at 120 hz looks better than 2160 at 30 hz.)

Thirdly, and this is probably completely unrelated to the TV, GPU accelerated video simply doesn't work. VLC shows solid black, youtube shows solid green.

Fourthly, what the hell happened to the 50" firmware? It's no longer listed on the seiki download page. I could swear I flashed this firmware before and it worked decently, and I wanted to try it again. Currently I have the mod firmware.

I have a similar problem on one of my displays at 1080p@120hz I get very little snow but anything else above that gets a bit worse but not too the point that I cant take it

Sounds like you should try lowering some stuff (back porch, or just refresh rate a little bit).

What do the back porch and blanking values in CRU mean? I've tried searching this but no luck.

The bizarrity here has grown only more bizarre, and I'm losing patience. Turns out my previous problems were mostly caused by a non-updated driver for the 280. Downloading the most recent from AMD's site fixed things, and for a few hours things worked beautifully.

There was still a problem in switching resolution. Say I have the desktop in 3840x2160@30 and I enter a game that's set to fullscreen at 1920x1080. Usually instead of swapping to 1920x1080@120 it just keeps the output resolution in 3840x2160@30. I don't know if the TV upscales or the GPU (GPU scaling is off) but it usually (not always) displays full screen. If I use the menu to select desktop size as 1920x1080, it also sometimes (not always) stays at 1920x1080@30 and outputs to the tv in 3840x2160@30. Only by going into CCC and setting both resolution and refresh, and then opening a game, could I control the resolution and refresh rate both.

However, the desktop was beautiful, and that's what I mostly had this monitor for.

All that changed earlier tonight, and I have no idea why. Out of the blue the monitor apparently just stops working. After a lot of rebooting and fiddling and failing to get into windows safe mode, I swap my hdmi-hdmi cable for a dvi-hdmi cable. The dvi-hdmi can't handle 4k (?) so it drops into a lower resolution, which works. Turns out the problem was simply that 2160 was not working, but the computer had no idea and was just carrying on. I uninstalled and reinstalled all drivers, after which I could enter 2160 but the TV resolution remains at 1080 and so only 1/4 of the desktop is shown. When I re-install the pixel patcher (reinstalling drivers undid the pixel patcher) then 4k goes back to not working. With a blanking value of 560 in CRU, the total pixel clock is at 297 mhz. Is that too high? This is the same hdmi cable that was working fine with 4k for two weeks.

Anyway, I am completely confused and have no idea what to do next to try to restore a working 3840x2160@30.

Reflash the stock firmware.

Per "Xevious" in the thread just linked:

The 50" firmware is no longer linked but is still at the same URL.

Two questions.

1. My Seiki (39 inch model) doesn't pick up my digital/HD channels. My cable provider has the analog/SD channels at 100 and below and HD at channels 100+. Problem is that the Seiki only see's the SD channels. So no HD TV. Any reason?

2. Tried using the customer res utility to add 1080p @ 120Hz but I can't get it to work. I add the resolution and the refresh rate and restart my PC but I still can't select 120Hz when running 1080p.

Thoughts?

1. No clue. Try using an external receiver.

2. You may need the pixel patcher first. See Salamacha's link at the beginning. It also may only work with certain drivers - my AMD has no trouble with 1080@120 after just doing the pixel patcher and CRU (I assume that's what you mean by "customer res utility"). In CRU I put it in the specialty resolutions (up top), not standard resolutions field.
