Help Yawa decide, two viable AMD paths to consider...

Thread Starter
Now that the AMD APU summit has come and gone, we have a lot more information, and in turn a lot less wild speculation, to influence our future rig building decisions. That being said, I'd like to pick your brains fellow Overclockers on the two possible upgrade paths I've spent the past few days debating internally. Hopefully the advice and conjecture given in this won't just help me make a choice, but will hopefully help anyone else debating similar pathways.

So here we go.

- First option is the obvious one for any tech junkie. Full upgrade to the latest and greatest. Buy myself a top of the line FM2+ Motherboard (using top of the line and FM2 in the same sentence still feels weird), grab the highest performing Kaveri, get a 360mm rad (to keep my current 240mm one compan and help cool the graphics card), waterblock, r290, and finally a 1440p monitor and call it a day for a few years minus any feasible drop in upgrades that may come along.

The downside to this of course is that the summit didn't shed nearly as much light on a few crucial subjects as a lot of us would have liked. Particurally in regards to how long exactly FM2+ is going to be viable with DDR4 right around the corner? As well as, is the pure CPU side of Kaveri going to be a legitimate enough upgrade for people to consider ditching their higher end Vishera's? As well as can we expect any better, higher core count, enthusiast chips from this platform in the future?

A lot of question marks there, but still this would have been the clearcut choice of someone starving for an upgrade if the genuinely shocking idea of option number 2 had not shown itself at the summit.

- Of which of course I am referring to the topic and surprising benchmarks of an underclocked FX-8350 and AMD's reveal that using Mantle and ports coming from the console written with AMD specific libraries in mind, are going to be properly optimized to FX chips, thereby boosting performance enough to maybe even compete with Haswell ( even in Multi-GPU situations) for the foreseeable future. I can tell you that anyone who watched that part of the summit was shocked to learn that supposedly in games coded with low level API tools and AMD centric libraries ( which will be many considering the console situation) the FX-8350 seemed to be removed from the bottleneck equation entirely, and in fact seemed to become a strength and not a weakness in high end, Multi-GPU, gaming rigs.

Now people running Vishera and Linux have been claiming for the last year that AMD's CPU's can easily match or beat a lot of high end Intel CPU if the software libraries weren't so Intel favored. Well at the Summit AMD came out and basically stated emphatically that "Yes, this has indeed been the case," and seemingly vowed to use their console and developer influence to correct this.

So keeping all that in mind, option #2 would clearly be to stay the course, keep my current MOBO and FX-8350 ( she does clock over 5Ghz after all), get myself the 360mm rad, r290, and 1440p monitor, and wait it out for the DDR4 boards and high end, high core count Excavator chips to experience a monumental upgrade down the road.

Now the issues with this choice are, I'd be stuck with an 970 board with ancient architecture, North bridge and ram that refuse to OC past 2400 MHz and 1866Mhz respectively, PCI Express 2.0, and a board that just isn't fun to overclock.

Also on a side note, even though I am most definitely a budget minded System builder who tries to make practical ( some would say Macguyver like) choices when it comes to computers and limited funds, I would be leaving that upgrade bug completely unattended to for at least another year, and being what we are, doing what we do you all know how dangerous to our wallet ( and sanity) that can be.

So please folks pile on. Let's have a legit discussion on the future prospects of AMD systems, as there is no better time than today to get excited about tomorrow.

I'd keep what you have for the time being, and wait for FM2 + DDR4 + AMD's latest CPU architecture to do a full upgrade. DDR4 is good motivation down the road smile.gif

There's nothing shabby about the 8350, and with its 8 cores + Mantle it should scream in the next generation of games optimized for it - which I predict will end up being quite a few!

I would also say to wait it out and stick with what you have for now. I personally think intel is the way to go as of now but in a few years amd is going to be great. Amd is trying to overhaul everything in the near future so I would hold off until everything gets moved to their new technologies.

Funny, I am doing just the opposite-lol
But, that is just me.
I am ditching my sig rig and going with the biostar matx fm2+ MB (whenever it is getting released) and a 290-already have the 1440p crossover.
This is all going under water.
Yes, I know it is over kill, for now...I have a feeling, That AMD is going to surprise us with a great Kaveri APU.

I say, Keep what you have and get the 1440 monitor and a 290.
