Thoughts on which set of Bookshelf speakers to get? Put the ones I have on my desk and they are REALLY big.

For under $100 it's going to a be a bit tough, but the Polk R150, T15 or Monitor series bookshelfs go on sale quite often. The Pioneer BS-21 is good option if you can find it. I know Fry's still sells them for cheap when it's on sale. They'll also have the JBL Loft and Infinity Primus series on sale too.

You can look for used ones locally too. Like Energy, Klipsch, Polk etc.

Edit: Newegg has refurbed Pioneer BS-21 for $50. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16886983001

So I have my old receiver(Technics from late 90s) connected to a really old set of Sony bookshelf speakers(SS-U 4030) and center(from a surround set in the mid 90s) and a Polk PWS10.
HOLY COW. What a HUGE difference. Playing BF4 is a completely new and better experience.

The Bookshelf speakers are really to large for my desk(8") and I really cannot wait to try a new set. Thinking 5-6" would be the largest I would want to go.

The Micca MB42X seem like a nice set.

The MB42X has an actual crossover compared to the MB42 which just uses a single cap crossover IIRC. You're definitely going to need a sub for those though.
