Loop advice (beginner)

Thread Starter
Hello,

About two years ago I started with overclocking my CPU. Now, two years later I've overclocked serveral CPU's and GPU's. Quite succesfull I think. But to achieve more I need to get rid of my H100 and the Lightning cooler of my 770 Lightning.
My system specs are:

CPU: I5 3570K (currently at 4,5Ghz)
Mobo: P8-Z77-V LE (not the best overclocking mobo but I am doing well with and well.. when it brakes I replace it with a better one)
GPU: 770 Lightning (about 10% increase with 0.1v)
PSU: 750W Seasonic Platinum

I am also going to try to delid my CPU before I place it in my loop (well my gf is going to try cause she is more patience:D).

I overclock for 24/7 usage and try to get the most out of it. I am not interested in extreme overclocking just for 1 high benchmark score.

Now, because I am completely new to watercooled systems I searched the internet and I think I found a decent set up. I would be happy if you guys/girls could take a look at it and give me some feedback.

Case: Corsair obsidian 750D

XSPC RayStorm D5 EX360 WaterCooling Kit
- RayStorm Intel CPU Waterblock
- D5 Dual Bay Reservoir
- D5 Vario Pump
- EX360 Dual Radiator
- G1/4″ to 7/16″ Compression Fittings (Black Chrome) x6

Do I need an additional radiator for my setup? I don't intend to go for SLI. It will just be the CPU/GPU but both with a good overclock. If so, I was thinking of:

XSPC EX240 Black - 240

Aqua-computer AquagraFX for GTX 680 Lightning (I've read that it will also fit on a 770 lightning, correct?).

I can't find the G1/4″ to 7/16″ Compression Fittings (Black Chrome) in a Dutch/Belgian shop. What else can I use? I guess I need two more for my GPU (2 radiator 360, 2 CPU, 2 Pump/reservoir) and perhaps even 2 more for the second radiator.

Also, the kit comes with 2 Meters of Clear 7/16″ Hose, Is this enough for my loop or should I buy some more?

Then, the kit comes with K2 Thermal Paste. Should I replace it with Artic MX-2? If I am correct I can use the MX-2 also for my delidded I5 3570K on the TIM and IHS (I've not yet taking a very good look at the delidding topic..)

And what kind of coolant should I get? (note: I am trying to go for a blue look).

And last but not least... did I forget something? UV-lights, additives or something else I need to get to get started with?

Thanks in advance!

Lotta questions for one post smile.gif

Kits are an excellent introduction because iof their low price .... but make sure ya don't get dissatisfied down the road.

1. First let's figure how much ya need to cool .....
http://www.guru3d.com/articles_pages/msi_geforce_gtx_770_lightning_review,7.html

So we say 197 watts stock, 250 overclocked

Picked a 4.7 GHz OC on the CPU w/ 1.35 volts
http://extreme.outervision.com/psucalculatorlite.jsp

says 124 watts, say 130

So we need 380 watts of cooling and we'll use 10C as target delta T

2. What fans speed / noise level ya wanna run at ?

Lets say 1250 for low noise .... and I'll use Alphacool in the example as they top the charts over at martisliquidlab
http://martinsliquidlab.org/2012/04/12/alphacool-nexxxos-ut60-360-radiator/4/

An Alphacool UT60-360 will give ya 227 watts and another UT60-240 will add 152 watts for a total of 379 in push / pull (10 fans) . Other brands a lil bit less...see the curves above

Now that's getting 99.7% of ya cooling from just the rad surface .... the rest of ya components all will radiate heat ..... anything from 60% on up is "workable" which is just about what you would get outta the 360 alone. So ya might wanna start out w/ just the 360 and then see whether the 140 makes sense for ya.

3. So next thing to decide, is how big a case do ya need ?. I found the 750D a bit small for my needs ... and the Corsair 900D was pricey and "big" .... finally found my "Goldilocks" case in the Enthoo. Give it a look if ya willing to up the budget by $100..... comes with five excellent $20 fans tho, so that's a consideration.

4. I had chosen the Raystorm for my CPU Block also but after reading many reviews, switched tot he EK Supremacy.... it just did better with Haswell / Ivy Bridge ... but the Raystorm does very well with a 3rd pace finish and I love the aesthetics.
http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?285753-CPU-water-blocks-roundup

5. I'm not fan of bay reservoirs .... not really a fan of acrylic reservoirs.... if ya can fit them, the XSPC Photon and Aqualis are made of borosilicate glass and don't have the leakage issues that have been reported with acrylics, especially bay type. That was what initially kicked me outta the "kit" game as all the kits only had bay res's and saw just too many leak reports at seams.

6. For the GPU, EK has the EK-FC680 GTX Lightning - Acetal+Nickel [3831109857007] full cover block
http://www.frozencpu.com/products/17369/ex-blc-1343/EK_MSI_GeForce_680_GTX_Lightning_VGA_Liquid_Cooling_Block_-_Acetal_Nickel_CSQ_EK-FC680_GTX_Lightning_-_AcetalNickel.html
as does Aquacomputer http://www.sidewindercomputers.com/aqcofucogpub.html

I like the look of the Aqua's but most peeps seem to prefer the EK .

UV Lights I buy from China smile.gif ... takes a while but ya get what ya want and cheap as hell .... and ya can buy thru amazon

Coolant, I like Mahems pastels
http://www.frozencpu.com/products/17701/ex-liq-282/Mayhems_Pastel_Coolant_Concentrate_-_250mL_-_Blue_Berry.html

For delidding,m that's a collaboraive labs thing ... when ya read the delid threads, you'll understand. I used Gelid Extreme on all my blocks.... Shin Etsu is my 2nd choice.

And the last thing ya need is something to give your GF to keep you from getting in trouble about spending the money or not paying attention to her while fiddling w/ ya computer smile.gif

Case wise you have made a good choice, not a big fan of bay/res but to each his own....A 360 rad should be good for just a cpu+gpu setup but the 750d case can hold another 240 or 280 so i would just grab another rad for even better temps....Just stop by the 750D club and you will see some water cooled rigs with both res and pumps or just bay/res combo....I just may give you an idea how to run your loop or what the loop will look like once completed....

Awesome advice! Especially the last one:D Going for a custom loop then and not a kit and take your advice in my mind. But I am going to stick with the 750D. I will take a look at the corsair 750D owners club like Jamaican Reaper advised.

I certainly took a good look at your rig Jamaican Reaper. I like it a lot!

I decided to buy all I need seperatly instead of the XSPC Kit. What do you guys think? Will this work? Did I forget something? Like connectors, screws, fittings? How much meters tube is required and what about the liquid? Is one bottle enough? Arghh so many questions!!

And btw, I''ll go with Gelid Solutions GC-Extreme as cooling paste.

I've not placed my order yet so feel free to give some feedback. The total bill is €511,- (items listed in the picture) so if it can be a bit cheaper then yes please rolleyes.gif but only if I don't loose to much quality.

Once again, thanks in advance!

Oh and btw, for my gf I was thinking of this set biggrin.gif

Not sure you have enough fittings, just do a drawing of your loop and label the fittings in it and you will know if you need more, also for tubing i wouldnt use anything less than PrimoChill PrimoFlex Advanced LRT Tubing, also the res to me is abit small....I'm using a 80mm and it looks so small in my rig, only got it because i couldn't get my hand on a 150mm res....One more thing sometimes angle fittings do come in handy for really nice bends....just my 2cents.gif
