A lurker finally joins up with a fresh HTPC build to show.

Hello! I just finished my first build and used this website and forum as a resource during the entire process so I finally decide to join up.

I live in Kansas City, Missouri and have been here my entire life. I am a divorced guy with two daughters that keep me on my toes. Other than computers, I am a huge sports fan, read a lot, and enjoy being outdoors biking and other stuff. I have been interested in computers since I was old enough to use one and have taught myself everything I know about them through exploring, practice and trial and error. I have dabbled in a lot of areas with computers but never built one from individual parts before the build below. I kinda regret not doing this until now. I enjoyed it.

I spent several months researching and deciding what I wanted to do and finally built my machine last week. I work 5 minutes from a Microcenter so I got everything there except for the RAM which I got off Amazon. Here are the Specs:

CPU - AMD A8-6600K Black Edition
Mobo - MSI FM2-A75MA-E35
RAM - Kingston Blu Red Series 8GB (1 x 8GB) DDR3-1600
Storage - Samsung 840 EVO 120GB SSD
Case - Fractal Design Core 1000 USB 3.0
PSU - Corsair CX600M
Drive - LG CD/DVD RW
OS - Windows 7 Professional
I am using a wireless mouse and keyboard I had for control. I spent about $300 on everything.

I have this hooked up through an LG surround sound system w/ Blu Ray player and an LG 42" LCD TV. I have a 1TB external HD with all my media on it hooked up to it.

I plan on adding a TV Tuner Card, additional storage, a media remote, and possibly an upgraded sound card and graphics card. I keep getting mixed feedback on whether or not another GPU might be necessary on other forums I post on. We shall see how she does with everything. Anyone care to give input on that? I am a big music fan so I want an upgraded sound card to push music through my surround sound system at the highest quality possible. I am also going to build a media server using an old Dell laptop and a Raspberry PI and will hook up my external HD to it with all my media.

It was a lot of fun and I look forward to building more machines in the future. I am that person in my family that fixes everyone's computer so I am going to build people machines when they want a new one going forward. I have a lot of family who are still running machines they bought around the time XP came out and will need an upgrade once XP stops being supported next year so I will probably get a lot of practice!

Absolutely. These arent the best quality I plan on upgrading to an actual HTPC case as well. I just needed something to get it built within my budget and that case was on sale for $28.

well that is a nice flat CPU fan. HTPC cases generally range from low profile, to super low profile to "you're kidding, right?" It leaves you with a lot of choice

As for the GPU thing, You can drive 1080p video fine with integrated graphics, but not 4k. Also, it won't game for beans. If you're just going to hook it up to a regular TV to watch movies and surf the internet on integrated is fine. If and when 4k video gets going you may run into problems.
