Winter Benching Questions

I live in North Carolina and one of the things I am looking forward to is winter with my first water loop. From all accounts I have heard, if you want to push your water-cooled rig to the limit without resorting to methods that could cause condensation or other such problems, you simply wait until a cold day, put on a warm coat, and open a window.

However, a problem comes to my mind. I intend to do this on one of my area's rare sub-20 degrees Fahrenheit mornings. The freezing point of distilled water is obviously 32. Would I have issues with water freezing in the radiators as long as the computer is at least idling if ambient is around 15F? If so, what is the lowest temperature at which I would likely not have an issue with this?

Lastly, does anyone have any recommendations on how to get the most out of this when I eventually do it? Pro-tips from anyone knowledgeable or better yet someone who has done this would be appreciated.

I would not recommend turning the computer off while being in a below freezing temperature, but as long as the computer is doing something, and the pump is running it shouldnt freeze. But I would not leave it unattended or idle for too long in case the water gets too cold. Though water in motion usually wont freeze unless it gets really cold, you could end up with a layer of ice on top or your res though.

If you mix the water with some antifreeze or something it would be able to withstand lower temps.

Having a 2011 system my self, I know that the mosfet gets insanely hot, so unless it is watercooled, I would put a fan over it, to make sure it gets cold, and then just crank up the system like a normal overclock. But with a colder ambiet temperature you should be able to get some better overclocks, if you are willing to push the Vcore.

This will be a full-on overclocking expedition, my intent is to get as high of a Fire Strike score as possible so I will be cranking both the CPU and GPU as high as they will go without temps getting too up there.

As for my Mosfets, they are under water. My Mobo's chip and mosfet is underwater, being just after the CPU in a cooling sequence after a 240mm rad. My GPU is directly after a 480mm rad which then leads into the 240mm rad.

Shouldnt really be a problem then. Just watch the flow and perhaps the temperature of the water and you should be fine.

Years ago I built a shelf outside the window I placed the rig on and ran the cords through the window then closed the window as much as I could. I would let it acclimate outside for about 1 hour before turning it on.

Worked great and never had a problem with condensation or freezing.

I don't think you will need to drop the temps in your room to below zero to achieve the cooling you desire.Just a 20 degree drop in ambient should be fine.

No way to answer as there are too many variables....radiator, fan speed, watts being produced (what processor, what GPUs) .... how long before wife / GF / SO beats ya over the head w/ a stick cause she's cold smile.gif
