Issues with a receiver and Questions with 5.1 audio build.

I have a lot of questions. I have an old 2 channel Sony ta-ax335 receiver. The right channel has been acting funny, and sometimes not working at low volumes. I can get it to work again by turning the volume up past half way on the receiver. My first question is this a easy diagnosis and fix? I would like to keep this receiver with some cheap bookshelf speakers I have, but the issue is rather annoying.

I want to upgrade to 5.1 and have a budget of about 300 bucks give or take. I will be using this on my computer with hdmi to receiver then to my monitor(50% gaming, 50% music). I have bought some Polk monitor2 30s and have some Cerwin vega ht-s5 rear speakers and matching center speaker that I am planning on using (good cheap 5 dollar theft shop find). I want the best bang for my buck. I have been looking at stuff and reading reviews.

So far I have Polk Audio PSW10 and SONY STRDH540 5.2-Channel 4K AV Receiver REFURBISHED. I am not so sure about the cerwin vega speakers that I have and may be replacing them in the near future but not as of right now. They do not have any bass at all but in a center speaker I would think that is ok. Any advise or better receiver/sub would be appreciated because I do not have a clue what I am doing.

Toss that faulty Sony receiver and get an active audio system. Get an $85 Asus Xonar DX sound card for the PC. Get active, self amplified speakers. You can get 5 of them and a sub to setup as 5.1. It's gonna be expensive route, but a very smart route for better sound. Passive audio systems have muddy and flat sound, very weak contrast.
