I've been using my HDTV with DVDs for five years now, it's fine. Upgrading to HD video discs is going to be another one of those things that you don't really need and can easily live without indefinitely...until you have it for a while, then you can't imagine going back.
So I'm in no hurry to get either format, DVD is fine. Is HD-DVD better? Certainly! Am I willing to throw my eggs into one basket or the other in the format wars? Absolutely not! I'll wait until Blu-Ray officially dies, or the dual-format players are reasonable priced, before I jump in. I'm not about to own the next Betamax or Laserdisc player.

Aha, this is the point that most of the "But $600 is a good price because it has a Blu-Ray!!!!" fanboys like to conveniently omit. Blu-Ray has zero impact on gaming, despite Sony's ridiculous claims to the contrary. It has been empirically proven that, based on historical growth rates, game sizes are extremely unlikely to need Blu-Ray's storage capacity at anytime in this generation's life span (fice years); and that some current PS3 games actually fit onto a frickin' 4.7GB DVD-R when you strip out the filler crap.
So Sony didn't do it for any reasons involving gaming. It was the movie playback functions that drove the whole deal. They want to own the next de facto movie playback standard so that they can get a license fee on every last movie sold to anyone in the world. And the way to make your standard into THE
standard is to make sure everyone on Earth has your hardware that can play your discs. And in its arrogance, Sony assumed that everyone on Earth would buy a PS3 regardless of price. That's not conjecture; they're on record saying as much, that people would buy it at any price. (Idiots. Take Econ 101, you fools.) So they added the Blu-Ray and raised the price of the PS3 to a historic high for a gaming console (50% more than the average mainstream console launch price, adjusted for inflation), all to make money with Blu-Ray movies. And severely tarnished the Playstation brand name in doing so. Someone at Sony needs to be kicked in the rear end.
Now, in closing, to all of the fanboys who have posted meaningless drivel in this thread: This was an example of a post with what we like to call "content". Notice how I am clearly still strongly biased and am expressing strong opinions. But see all that other stuff? That's called "content" that explains why
I have those opinions. Please at least make an attempt to explain your opinions in the future. Example: "Wii suxxorz!!! PS3 pwns!!!!"...bad. "The Wii sucks! The PS3 is way better because...reason 1....reason 2...." etc....good!
