My CPU just died :(

I believe my CPU has just passed on to another world.

Long Version:

For the longest time Ive had on and off again issues. Back in Feb, I built this new machine. 3770K, ASrock z77 OC formula, gskill trident 2133 16GB, seasonic platinum 1000W etc.

I had to adjust the memory to run at the rated speeds in dual channel (was fine with xmp in single). The BIOS would go funny. Just rebooting my machine would lose the soundcard.

In the end just recently I caved and replaced the motherboard with the msi z77 mpower. (didnt have many choices).

CPU @ 4.5 - 1.248 fixed on the Asrock, stable as a rock in that respect. no crashes, no bsod, no whea errors.

I got the mpower, installed, memtested perfect no errors xmp dual channel. Great! a win!.

installed windows, then went to install the soundcard. Doesnt work. At all. In any machine. Great, it died.

Move on, put my OC back on. Cant get a fixed voltage (even though the msi has no offset without the roundabout way). On the asrock no matter the load on the cpu it would remain, 1.248. The msi seems to fluctuate with the vdroop even though its fixed voltage. Maybe I just misunderstand that, or the other displays it differently. whatever.

Had a crash, increased voltage. ok up to 1.2550. BF4 is fine, no crashes, no whea. Was fine for a number of weeks. Tried a render a few days back, BSOD, 101. increased again, repeat. thought I had it stable with 1.28. worked fine all day, did a few renders, no issue.

Today I tried to render, it froze. reboot computer, windows loads and freeze. reboot again.. nothing. it post loops. hits status code 15 on the debug, and restart. (nothing on the screen the enter time)

Swap motherboards back to the asrock. stops on status code 62. (still no signal).

tried another gpu's, nothing. Another PSU - same deal. plug in a speaker to the mobo, take out ram, it beeps as expected. Try with single sticks, either or, nothing. no beeps.

Im pretty sure that the cpu is dead. It never had voltage higher then 1.29. RIP.

Off to buy another 3770K I guess.

Yeah it does sound like CPU frown.gif. Did you remove clear the CMOS and remove the CMOS battery though? Just something to try. Sorry to hear that though man frown.gif. Good luck!

Whoa man supposedly thats safe voltage. You sure it was stable in the first place? How long you had this cpu, was it using offset, was it on 24/7 etc?

Ive had this cpu since february.

Im positive it was stable. It ran on the ASrock board with the fixed voltage of 1.248 24/7. It was also stable using offset on the ASrock board.

Ive always felt something wasnt right in the combination somewhere. I did suspect the CPU but how often is a cpu faulty?
As mentioned I had issues with the asrock board (bios would just drop all settings for no reason, or the OC would be set in the BIOS but then not applied in windows).

I had been talking to asrock, who sent me new bios chips, even an unreleased bios (you can see my mention of it in the z77 OC formula thread). regarding my ram. (it would work single channel xmp, but not dual channel xmp (throw errors through memtest) - even without xmp it was the same story).

After months of back and forth I asked for a new board. ASrock directed me to their distributors, the issue: The board was discontinued, the issue intermittant. I spoke to place of purchase who offered me a credit if they found it faulty obv. Because of the intermittant nature I felt like I would pay for the shipping etc back only to have them say no issue.

In the end I caved, sucked up a loss, and bought the MSI Z77 Mpower.

The board installed easily enough, my ram worked as intended. There is no offset without doing it via a roundabout way in the BIOS, so I just stuck with fixed, and punched in the previously stable for months 24/7 voltage. It had some issues so I increased and tested, rinse repeat. I thought I had it, no BSODs, no freezing, no crashing, no whea. It was fine for a number of weeks, sitting at 1.285v (this is where I ended up cause of vdroop and full load). I had the render freeze as mentioned in the OP, even though I managed to render other things the day before just fine. I increased to 1.290. Then it happened. dead. no more.

Im trying to decide my next move.
Do I buy another 3770K and pray...

or do I just move on from the issues and buy a z87/4770K. It seems z87 is more problematic from a quick glance then z77 was. It could just be those with issues raise their voices while those that dont carry on as they were (is always the way with anything though).
