Cheapest sound card for my specific needs. Want to buy as soon as i get an answer.

Hello, i just ordered the Superlux HD861 EVO Headphones and the only game i play is Battlefield 4.

I want:
1) Dolby Surround/Surround whatever - i dont know what you call it -- but i want the sound to immerse me in Battlefield 4 rolleyes.gif
2) Accurate sound card that will give me accurate sound. If im hearing a tank or missile whiz by me on my left side in game, i want to hear the same exact thing on my headphones.

Inputs:
1) Only thing ever plugging into my sound card is my headphones, nothing else

My only slot to put a sound card is PCIe. But if it is PCI then i can get a riser cable; as i am going to use a PCIe riser cable regardless as my only PCIe slot on my Micro ATX mobo is blocked by my video card.

Can a sound card under $50 do this for me? There are these 100-200 dollar sound cards out there and i simply just want surround gaming while possibly getting better sound for my music.

I am coming from a Logitech G35 so i am no audiophile but i am looking for good bassy music when listening to Drum&Bass/Trance/Dubstep/House while i am flying vehicles in Battlefield 4. I am not planning on going all out on an audio set up as my budget is under $50 even under $30 would be great! If that is possible...

Imho the only reason to get Xonar STX or another 200$ soundcard is for the headphone amplifier (TPA6120 in STX and ZxR).
As HD681 Evo is only 32ohm they don't need one.

For tight budget I would recommend Xonar DG(X), and for more future proof SBZ would be a good choice as it has better headphone amplifier and separate outputs for speakers and headphones. And the SBX surround is better for gaming.

The Xonar DG(X) does give small amount of hissing noise to the HD681Evo (hard to notice), mainly because the Evo has low impedance of 32ohm.

I recommend to first test if the onboard+Razer Surround quality is enough for you.

The DG is PCI and the DGX is PCIe; why are they different? is there a reason to this? http://www.amazon.com/ASUS-XONAR-Headphone-Audio-Card/dp/B0045JHJSS/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1384808407&sr=8-1&keywords=pcie+sound+card+dolby+surround

I am looking at this http://www.amazon.com/Xonar-DGX-PCI-E-GX2-5-Engine/dp/B007TMZ1BK So this will be enough?

DG and DGX are identical cards except the connection.
DGX was released because PCI became obsolete (no modern mobo has it natively anymore).

EDIT: There is also the Creative Audigy FX soundcard which was released recently. On paper it seems like a good competitioner for the Xonar DG(X), but not many reviews/feedback yet as it's just too new at the moment.

Thank you Tiihokatti you are super helpful! I will purchase the DGX when i get home from work.

Do you know if there is a harm on using a PCIe riser extender? As in affecting the quality of sound?

http://www.amazon.com/Micro-SATA-Cables-Express-Flexible/dp/B0054CLQTI

I will be using this cable. I heard someone saying that the non-shielded version may cause interference problems or something; i dont exactly know what that means but could you shed some light on the topic? Will i be fine?

Using shielded cables is kind of gimmicky IMO.

I have shielded cable simply because it was cheap and I made all my own cables, I don't notice a big difference. The only thing I have that causes interference is my ancient cell phone. Most computer systems don't cause enough EMI for you to need shielded cables. thumb.gif
