Help me get 4Ghz+ stable on bloomfield (stuck at 3.8ghz)

Hey guys, trying to get my i7 950 x58 rig back to 4.2ghz stable.. I was reinstalling windows 7 on a new ssd and I reset my bios to default settings for this to ensure no issues, now for whatever reason I can't remember how I was able to get 4.2ghz stable because I'm completely stuck.

Heres what it looks like at 3.8ghz

My bios settings off the top of my head are
165 x 23
qpi is x36
uncore is x16
vcore - 1.36
dram voltage - 1.66
I then made the qpi/vtt 1.31 for whatever its finally 20 pass stable in linX
i manual made ioh core, ich i/o, and qpi ppl to the manual added normal values.. I had someone tell me if you leave them on auto the pc the motherboard might over volt them when trying to o/c.

This above is stable enough for me, but I want to get 4ghz and I have a custom loop (ax360, raystorm block) coming soon and I know I can get higher.

I've tried making my
vcore 1.38
raised cpu ppl to 1.88
raised ioh slightly
and
tried
180 x 23 ratio
181 x 21 ratio
both with no luck.. I can't seem to stay stable in linX, it typically gives me an error eventually between the 5th and 13th pass saying linX stopped on error! I ran prime95 with similiar settings above last night on blend and it crashed while I was sleeping about 40 minutes in (it hard locked my screen)
I consider 5 hours of prime95 and 20 passes of linx stable enough for me.

II really don't know how handle the ram, right now its stable with my ram set to 1333mhz but I think if I made it 1600mhz or somewhere in between it would not be stable. I also want to use hyper threading because of 3d apps and bf4. The timing seem correct when inputed, its this kit - http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=1&ved=0CC8QFjAA&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.corsair.com%2Fmemory-by-product-family%2Fxms-classic%2FCMX6GX3M3A1600C9.html&ei=MnCKUs2xHLbKsQS25YKYCA&usg=AFQjCNHgjjUwtKWw4qxJVGJlwN7pPtFwOQ&sig2=FEwItAlzI8in4LmBnDbezA&bvm=bv.56643336,d.cWc

Main problem is when trying to get 4ghz+ I'm not sure which setting is causing the issue, In the past I've needed 1.35 qpi/vtt I thought for my old 4ghz o/c. anyways thanks if anyone can give me some pointers.

Wow.....I don't have an i7 960. I do have an i7 920. If I am not mistaken there is an i7 920/930 guide in overclocking on OCN. Perhaps that can get you in the right direction. I have my i7 920 OC at 4.0ghz. I will look at my settings when I get home. Platform nowadays is just 1-2 clicks away to overclock. Definitely not in the case of the x58 platform. There was so much more involved to get stability.

Youve set your ram at 9-8-8-, shouldn't it be 9-9-9-?

Not really sure why it says that.. when i went into bios it said 9-9-9-24 and i set the timing to "auto" and the performance to "standard"

anyways using the the oc settings I had before (165x23) isn't even stable if I crank my ram to 1600mhz ( it reality its 1607mhz i think it says)

so im gonna try 21x185 and my ram set to 1600..

Set the Ram timing manually to 9-9-9-28-2T.

okay i tried that gonna test it tonight!

Don't use auto memory timings. Manually set absolutely everything you feel confident about.

The UD3R is a good OCing board, but you need to keep the VRM cool, which can be difficult if you are on water.

Make sure you are using the lowest QPI ratio (18/36x) and odd CPU multipliers. I would also try an uncore multiplier of 16x, and an 8x memory multiplier, you can adjust these later.

Disable all clock skews and any spread spectrum. Start with 700mv on both CPU and IOH clock drive.

Shouldn't need to do this.

Every Bloomfield I've ever had (about eight of them) was able to achieve it's maximum air-cooled OC with 1.3-1.5v CPU PLL. The UD3R allows you to reduce CPU PLL below stock, and in many cases this will improve stability.

IOH should really only need to be increased past 1.1v with some multi-GPU configs, or if pushing base clock well past 200MHz.
