[CNNMoney]NFL and MLB: Aereo may kill sports on free TV

Broadcast television networks now have two big allies in their fight against Aereo: the National Football League and Major League Baseball. The two sports leagues said Aereo could even cause them to stop airing games on free TV.

This could be bad news for American sports viewers that refuse to pay for the high cost of cable like myself.....

As long as my daughters can still watch PBS Kids, and my wife has her Hulu subscription. I'm good.

Not going to change anything. All the lower courts have sided with Aereo (and rightly so), and odds are the Supreme Court won't agree to take up the case.

I hope the NFL falls flat on their face over this. I have a pair of $400 tickets for next weeks Ravens vs Jets game (and a parking pass) and odd are that is the last bit of money that I will be giving them. If they yank football from TV, then so be it. I will root for a competing league to pop up and challenge the NFL ... like the AFL did in the 1960s.

I'm signed up for Aereo and can't wait for them to come to Baltimore/Washington DC. I will gladly pay the $8 a month to see TV on any device I want without having to put up an over the air antenna on my house.

What? The games will flat out say on them that reproduction or transmission of them is illegal. Or is that just wishful thinking on their part and they have no legal ground to back that up? I've been TV free since last March and I haven't even tried looking for streaming games of sports...well, aside from some colleges that stream games on ustream.

I didn't think I'd miss my NFL games as much as I have...I'd gladly pay $80 a year to get them back. Though for anything else I or my family want to watch there is a legal stream of it from some source.

You're just renting a DVR and HDTV antenna from the guy. As if both haven't been readily available for over a decade now..

Truth be told, I'd probably subscribe to get clear locals along with the seamless mobile experience without any fuss. Add in the "hopper" functionality, and it would be amazing for your average Joe.

Rebroadcast only applies is you are doing so to others, otherwise it falls under the "Fair Use" clause.

If they try to say that you can't restream an NFL broadcast, then any sort of amplifier of the hearing impaired (if if you are hard of hearing and hook it up to your stereo and up the volume ... or even just hook it up to the amp so you like it loud on your home theater, will be in violation .. as will be products like Sling Boxes, etc.

Are antennas even viable these days? I have a friend that can look out his window and see the TV tower...maybe three miles away. A "HD" antenna cannot pick up the channel without loosing it periodically. He can get a couple others though, but they are public television.

At my home on top of a fairly large hill I cannot get a single channel over the air with an indoor antenna. I guess I don't know any one who has gotten a large ugly out door antenna that make you look liek you are trying to contact the mother ship or something. I'd hope those will work, but do good old rabit ears work for any one any more?

I think a bigger threat are sites that illegally stream the content. Aereo only appears like a problem because it is legal, and the cable companies can't fight it.

I don't personally use one, but I have a friend that does. She picks up the locals plus some others pretty well.

A big monster antenna on her roof or an indoor antenna?
