Second HDD doesnt sleep.

Thread Starter
So i just bought an SSD because.... well mainly, because i wanted an SSD! biggrin.gif
- but also because my old HDD is starting to make alotta noise.

So after the install of the SSD everything is smooth, but my old HDD keeps spinning, even though it isn't in use.
- i just formatted (nothing has been put on it yet) and it still runs. Now i do not have a big understanding of HDD's
but i would imagine it would go into a sleeping state when its not used, is this wrong?

And if not; am i able to make it?

TL;DR: Can i put my second HDD into sleep to prevent noise?

I'm not too sure about it never going to sleep (perhaps describe the situation more) but in terms of it 'starting to make a lot of noise' I have read that is usually a sign of imminent HDD failure. I guess this is not always the case however since my HDD (like your's a secondary drive to an SSD that I recently installed) died several days ago without warning. There were no noises or anything. I would say the noises you are hearing coupled with the odd behavior of it not sleeping are warning signs of potential failure. I would back up anything of value right now and go easy on the drive. Hope this helps thumb.gif

Yeah i am aware that it isn't a good sign biggrin.gif, and i have already backed everything up, so im just using the last out of it, to save money.
But what i mean is that it never stops spinning. It is louder than my case fans so it is pretty annoying.

So whenever it's on it spins? Is something on it being utilized frequently by the system? Your operating system is on the SSD correct?

Correct, that is why i do not get it. Nothing is on there, to test it i wiped it completely, but it just keeps spinning.

Hmmm....I found this answer in a MS forum:

"I was able to stop the constant spinning up and down by changing the power settings in the control panel to NEVER turn off hard drives. What is interesting is that my previous setting was 20 minutes. So I have no idea why changing the setting to NEVER worked..."

Maybe go to the Control Panel and try this? I've also seen to try booting in Safe Mode and see if it still does it. Also, right click on your HDD in My Computer and go to Tools, Error-Checking. Select both options, run it, and restart. This will check the HDD for errors and try to fix them...of course being wiped I can't see what would be on there anyway but...You did "wipe" it via reformatting, correct? Not simply deleting everything in there?
