cpu/ motherboard question

Thread Starter
I've been wanting to upgrade for a while, but I'm not sure its worth it. The components (sig rig) aren't to out of date, but that motherboard sucks. I the motherboard doesn't like over clocking anything, so the most I've gotten out of my CPU is 4.2. I'd like to try to get more out of it. Would upgrade to a Asus maximus v formula be worth it? Eventually I want to upgrade to socket 2011, but I can't afford to drop over a grand on parts. So I can't make up my mind to upgrade my mobo and keep the 2500k til it dies. Or do nothing.

Right now I have an antec h20 620, but when the cooler master glacier 240 comes back in stock, I'm tempted to get that. I know most of these chip are very good over clockers, I'm just a lil disappointed that my mobo sucks. I can't even set my ram to 1600 without it failing to boot. I guess my question is how well is the 2500 going to hold up against the new chips, and how long I can run this chip without bottlenecking, not that my 660's will ever bottleneck my CPU.

1.) I wouldn't upgrade to a board that expensive. If you want to upgrade to Z77 board you don't need to go too crazy. If you want to spend a little more money, then an ASRock Z77 Fatal1ty Professional would be most I would spend on a Z77 board right now. But realistically, you could go in the $150 range grab an ASRock Z77 Extreme6 and be fine or even in the $120 range and go with a Gigabyte GA-Z77X-UD3H.

All three will help you get to the 4.5-4.8GHz range. Anything higher than that is going to be based on how good of an overclocker your chip is and how well it's cooled.

A 2500k will last you all the way to Skylake with ease. I don't see any sense upgrading it until 2015-2016. It won't bottleneck your 660's and most likely anything else for quite some time.

Thanks. I actually found an Asus maximus v formula here in the marketplace for really cheap. So I went ahead and got it. That would be great if I could get 2+ years out oh the 2500k. I'm hoping it'll play nice and like to be over clocked.

Get a nice cooler for Air Noctua Nh d14

for closed loop check cooler master because you can add later second radiator to cool other components if you chose to go more water cooling means the pump can power more
example Eisberg 240
or check Swiftech but hard to find , there is H220 and H320

Yeah I was looking at the swiftech h220, but I guess its now rebranded in the US as the cooler master glacier 240. I think you can only get it off of newegg. The eisberg looks nice also.
