cf 290x or sli 780/780ti

Hello all first some specifics I am running surround monitors with a resolution of 5760x1200 on a RIVE with a 3820 at 4.5. I'm looking to upgrade my aging 2gb gtx 680 they are showing there age and I want the additional vram for current and future games. My rig is fully custom water cooled so the temp issues/throttling will not be an issue. My question is what will give me the best performance I play bf4 as my main game but play pretty much everything. I like the lower price of the 290x especially since I will also need blocks with the card. Getting 2x cards to start then going 3x. From all I have seen I feel my best bet is to go with 290x I have always bought green before always hearing how amd has bad drivers is this a non issue anymore. Thanks for the help guys.
PS I am looking at selling the 680s just a heads up

290x with water blocks will beat the 780 but it might not beat the 780ti unless you get good overclocks on water.

I think the 4gb of vram and the lower price would make up for that agreed? The 780ti with waterblocks would probably cost 800 at least, while the 290x would cost like 650

at the same clocks R9 290 is close behind a R9 290X . roughly 5 - 7% slower. but its 150 bucks cheaper. the r9 290 is unbeatable value for money.

But I'm going to be overclocking so I think the 290x will make more sence, how does everyone feel about a 360 rad cooling the two cards eventually I will be moving from 800d to a 900d and increasing the amount of rads
post #6 of 9
i say a 360 will work for 2 cards should keep them under 50-60c maybe in the 40s even. Will depend on what rad you buy and what fans also.

Since you're going to be putting everything under water, grab the two 290X cards without a doubt, so long as you plan to stick to 2 cards. The only real downside to the 290X is the garbage stock cooler, and since you won't have to deal with that, it is easily the better option.

For two cards, SLI driver support is still probably *slightly* better than CF driver support, but AMD has closed the gap a LOT in the past year or two. I don't think drivers are enough of a difference to be a factor in a purchasing decision anymore.

The only hesitation I would have is your expressed desire to go to 3x cards. If you are serious about that, might want to stick to green team. Tri-fire support is very, very buggy (or at least, it was with the HD 7xxx series), and the issues (negative scaling, crashes, game incompatibility) have not been fixed to my knowledge.

TL:DR --> For 2 cards, go with the 290X, for 3 cards, probably go 780 or 780 ti
