If no games are on the hdd maybe try downloading a good heavy demo of something and try it. Mine was freezing a lot and then finally it wouldn't recognize discs. It would load them but it wouldn't spin. Got a new laser assembly with the motor included and switched them out and all is good. $35 part and now I have a backup laser if i need it later.
If it is a ylod, unless you can get it reflowed cheap or do it yourself, it probably isn't worth it cuz they just dont last. A local shop has a special machine for it and charges $65 but then it is only guaranteed for 60 days. That just isn't worth the cost to me.
I agree with you, reflowing is only temporary. Not really worth the time you spend to reflow it with the possibilities of it happening maybe tomorrow for example. Reballing is good, but then again, spending about 50+ for someone to fix your system, is it really worth it? When you could save that to buy a new one.
