Thread Usage in Games

Hi Guys

I have been reading lots of comments lately where people are saying games are still single threaded, maybe my interpretation of what they are saying is wrong but when someone says "are still single threaded I assume from that they think modern titles are single threaded. I completely disagree with this and decided to put up some proof of what games are doing these days. It seems that people make comments regarding this without proof to back it up so here it goes, my results of core usage. Software used is AMD system monitor that records your processor usage.

Hitman Absolution

Individual core usage

8 Core Average Usage

Battlefield 3

Individual Core Usage

8 Core Average usage

Far Cry 3

Individual Cores

8 Core Average Usage

Sleeping Dogs

Individual Cores

F1 2013

8 Cores Average Usage

Fifa 13

Individual Cores

8 Core Average Usage

So let me know your thoughts, my view is that the titles like sleeping dogs, HItman, Far Cry 3 and BF3 are certainly utilising the cores atleast 6 of them properly.

In terms of Fifa 13 I think from the data it is a dual thread game, lets not forget that even if a game is single threaded an 8 core seems to spread usage evenly amongst it's cores, hyperthetically 100% divided by 8.

Modern AAA games have the developers to properly multithread their game engines. Older games are still single threaded or dual threaded. Especially indie games are on the same boat .

Do this for Natural Selection 2 and see what the CPU usage is like.

Interesting, From all of my testing Far Cry 3 only supports 4 threads. Unless it supports either 4 or 8 but cannot scale to 6 in my case.

It's possible Windows is able to redistribute the work in some way.

It might be Windows is just swapping threads between cores a lot leading to high CPU consumption between cores.

Could you do a test with say 2 or 4 cores disabled and see your frame rates compared to 8 cores? (making sure to not be GPU limited) If there is a gain, then that means it can use more threads/cores.

I know for a few of my favorites games like Path of Exile or World of Tanks, they are single threaded (25-30% CPU usage and only 50% GPU load).

This is indeed happening.

@Stoffie, I appreciate your efforts on this. But if you want to know if a game is really using more cores, testing with disabled core/modules (dual, four and six cores) for each game should give you more accurate results. Comparing min, avg, max fps is also as important as comparing core/thread usage.

I don't think that is what is happening, my cpu gets very good overclock gains by disabling cores, it gets to 5.3 GHZ with 4 cores, I tried to run it like that after people said 8 cores is a waste etc, pretty much every game except Fifa had much worse FPS 35% - 40% and 2 7970's usage was about 30 percent.

I will run some tests tonight after work to show the difference.
