Streaming from a Virtual Machine?

Thread Starter
Hello OCN,

I am currently experimenting with Virtual Machines for the first time, and I have a few questions.

I am using Oracle VirtualBox, and have installed Windows 7 on a machine which I have allocated 50GB of my Hard Drive, 2 CPU cores, and 4GB of RAM.
The ultimate intention of this was for the Virtual Machine to render and stream a game of Age of Mythology to another machine on the same network.

It appears that I cannot get the Virtual Machine to access my Graphics Card on the host machine, the system in my signature, a Radeon 7950.
Age of Mythology will not start up, as I am getting an 'unsupported graphics card' error, related to the standard 'Graphics adapter for virtual box'.

On the streaming side of things, I have had success using Splashtop, and have managed to play a relatively stutter-free game of AoM streamed from my Sig Rig to a different laptop.
However the aim is for this to be done using a VM.

Is what I am attempting to do even possible?
I am new to the idea of VM's, so I wouldn't be surprised if it isn't! tongue.gif
I am out of ideas so any advice is appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Obvious question but I have to ask. Did you install the guest additions? Full gpu acceleration doesn't work as far as I understand it in any vm solutions. The game may not run great but it should at least load up I would expect.

Virtualbox is going to be rubbish for this kind of thing. You're going to need VMWare or a Linux hypervisor such as Xen.

Works on kvm https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=162768

Full gpu acceleration is impossible without PCI pass through

To do this this you need a IMOUU or VT/D proccessor and motherboard, after that you need to configure your virtualisation software to pass this through

I "belive" but could be wrong thats this is ONLY possible on Xen / QemuKVM

http://wiki.xen.org/wiki/Xen_VGA_Passthrough

(A project ive wated to do for ages is a gmaing pc virualised, then using spice to connect from a rasberry pi to access the vm from anywhere in the house / in trange of wifi for epic gaming pi tongue.gif)

I have installed guest additions - should have said in my post.
Should I be trying VMware instead?
I'll give it a go instead of virtual box.

I managed to launch and play titan quest, but the performance was terrible.

I will look into VGA pass throughs, but I don't think that my processor supports VT-d.

Thank you for the replies!
