[Case Mod] Secret Weapon: Yet another G5 mod emerges... - Page 5

UPDATE TIME:

Picked up a new toy... totally overkill for the current project (power cord splicing) but I'm planning on giving it a workout on some other projects - and practicing on some smaller board projects to develop my soldering skills better. Since a pretty crappy station was $35 and this was on sale for a little under $100 - and I've still got some tool budget left over this year - I splurged. biggrin.gif

If this soldering station isn't good enough... then whatever I'm working on is going to make me more than enough money to spring for one of the stupidly advanced models. Although it will much more likely pay for an employee along with that so I'm not even involved in that part of the process (I really don't get into that side of electronics that much). redface.gif

Also picked up a few other items. As I found a home for the other PSU, I went looking for something I wouldn't have to mod in order to have a full stock looking build (sorry Jeffinslaw... it just isn't worth it IMO). Of course, if I were doing something other than a low-powered OSX-dedicated machine... then things might be different. So without further ado... my new PSU:

I did have to take the top off just to peek under the hood. If I decide later on that the fan is simply too loud, then I'll do some testing with the top off and just the two front 60mm fans wired to the PSU voltage control. However, since I think the draw on this is going to be somewhere in the low 200W range - I'm guessing that it will still be nice and quiet.

Just a teaser for now... this will be the first job that 888 station gets to play with (hopefully it doesn't get too depressed that it's being tasked with such a simple job that a $5 iron could complete without a problem). smile.gif

Oh... and there was another package in my mailbox today! I got my custom harness (with Gigabyte audio splice wired in) for the case!

Looks very nice... a very professional job...

Sleeving is nicely done as well - although it will most likely never be seen once I'm done - it's still nice to see the attention to detail.

Thanks Peter (better known as AlohaCab on InsanelyMac or G5Modders). Great job on this!

Could I have done this cable/mod for less than $40? Of course I could have... however by the time I bought everything required, and had a couple failures I would have saved less than $15-20 and spent more than an hour on it... I consider it an absolute bargain under those circumstances. thumb.gif

I may be hitting you up to borrow that soldering iron when my case finally gets here lol

Sure! I take security deposits in BTC/LTC. biggrin.gif As you can see from the package shot - it's not only powerful and compact... but stylish! I consider this first and foremost when selecting tools... sure it may serve the purpose for which it was designed... but if it doesn't go with a pair of pumps and a new handbag... what good is it really. rolleyes.gif I'm also a big fan of pink handguns and purple tractors.

On the update front - I didn't get around to the soldering of anything yet... because UPS delivered something today... if interested - more about that HERE. It's going to be a lightning-fast build... since I need to be using it to post stuff unless I do it from my temporary hackintosh build (basically testing a vanilla Mavericks install which will be moved into this case when it's done).

Unfortunately all my BTC are spoken for and my purple tractor is currently in use. I may just have to go get my own frown.gif

Sucks that my old one died a horrible, nasty death (and a smelly one at that puke.gif) otherwise you could have just had it. Although I'm pretty sure you could just short an outlet with a coat hanger and get more reliable heat out of it!

I'm going about 4 different directions at once at the moment... but since there's going to be some warmer days this weekend - and with the confusion which has gathered around my other project... I just might get around to doing some painting and making some general progress on this build. I haven't even bothered to order my acrylic sheets for fabrication of the fan mounts, etc... so we're still a long way off of course. Maybe by the beginning of next year this build will be finished. rolleyes.gif

You are still way ahead of me. I checked the shipping and my G5 case still won't get here until Monday at the earliest. This two weeks of shipping is killing me. mad.gif

Anyway I am only going to be able to start prepping the case for all the things I have in store. My build probably won't really get started until I get my tax return.

Sounds like you have plenty of time to plan before you start building. Of course, if you're anything like me... all those plans will spontaneously combust the moment you actually start fitting hardware. rolleyes.gif

Oh you will see it finished... as to how old you might be when that happens... that's anyone's guess at this point. Part of the decision to go 'conservative' on this build (i.e. air cooling) was made simply because I didn't want to be still working on this at the end of next year. biggrin.gif

I should have some updates later on... but I'm going to also try to get my new SM8 build all finished and operational this weekend...

Just got the case today and let's just say it's a mess. I think I am going to have plenty of time just cleaning this thing up and making it usable frown.gif

Is yours empty already or is it full of components? Mine came with all the components in and it took years to get them all out frown.gif
