Custom Water Loop CPU & GPU - Need advice.

Thread Starter
Greetings all.

So Xmas is coming and im thinking of diving into water cooling.

I have a 3930k+NH-D14 @ 1.376v 4.6ghz and 780 Classified AXC 1241mhz 1.62v system at the moment inside a CM Storm Stryker case. The GPU is running hot, even at stock settings and 100% fan speed it cant stop itself from hitting the 80c throttle limit, i got unlucky with the chip in regards to heat it seems, but it does OC well (1241mhz)on its stock 1.62v boost voltage, it just cant keep it there temp wise.

So, i got the general concept down on water loops and such, but due to my oversized graphics card and choice of case along with the high heat produceing hardware im needing some opiniions/advice on how i should set out my loop.

here is a quik paint mockup scalled as best i could to give u an idea of my options.

Dark Blue : Motherboard & PSU
RED: GPU & Soundcard
PINK: Future Position of Second GPU and current Soundcard
Dark Green & lightGreen: Rad & Fans
Lightbue & Black/Grey : Res & Pump.

So i got 2 res/pump options.
My Case does not nativley support a front rad however the removable side plates used for the removabl HDD cages could be used to attach some universal Rad mounts to act as makeshift brackets. With that i would have space for a 240x80mm NexXos Monsta rad in Push/Pull.
On the top i 'think' i could get away with a 240x40mm rad in push or pull (internal fans (the case handle bracket is in the way of mounting fans within the top cover)), im hoping i can mount it far enough away from the MB tray to allow 5-10mm of overhang. Im thinking the XSPC AX240 in White would look nice if i can get some quiet white fans to go with it.

I've seen some people comment on bay res/pumps being 'awefull' ..dunno in what way, im mainly concerned with noise.
The tube res/pump would be a very tight fit but it can be done (check out TTL's Orca build), however it would be mainly obscured from view by the Optical/HDD internal structure.

So my main concern and questions are:
1) Would those rads, 1x 240x40 + 1x 240x80 be enough to keep a OC'ed 3930k+ OC'ed 780 (and possibly a second OC'ed 780) cool with the aim to use fan speed reducers to keep things quiet.
2) What fans would you recommend? **

** I would like atleast 1 white replacement case fan for the viewable rear fan (i find the stock case fan a bit noisey) + 6 rad fans (2 with Blue LED's) + 1 additional case fan for the bottom of the case to equalize air pressure.
In:
front 2 (4 in push pull)
bottom 1
Out
Rear 1
Top 2 (pull)

I Also havnt decided on a CPU blcok yet so any advice is welcome, im leaning towards the Alphacool NexXxos XP3 V2 Acetal edition, or the Phobya UC-1 Extreme.
I ony have 2 choices for GPU blocks (Hydro Copper or EKWB) and apparently the EK block though not the best looking as it doesnt cover the whole PCB, is the better option.

And one last thing. Pumps, D5 or DDC seems to be the common type, any particular sugestions on specific ones, quietness is essential.

Might aswell also add discussion on flow order/direction.

Going on the TubeRes setup

Pump > GPU> Top Rad > CPU> Front Rad > Pump
or reverse

or

Pump > GPU > CPU> Top Rad > Front Rad > Pump
or reverse.

Hoping to have al lthis decided by the end of the week...really need to get ordering.

Cheers for any help.

To answer your numbered questions:

1. You'll be able to keep cool your current CPU+GPU set up. Adding a 2nd GPU is ill advised without adding more radiators.
2. I can only comment on fans for the radiators: You'll most likely want Scythe Gentle Typhoons.

Fan orientation:

Personally I don't buy into the positive/negative air pressure within the computer case. The case itself is not air tight by any means. That being said, I would recommend you always draw outside/ambient air through the radiators. I believe in your current planned set up, you are mainly using the exhaust air from your front fans to cool your top radiator.

GPU Waterblock:

Any reason you can only use EKWB or Swiftech (like living in an area where the retailers only stock those two)? If you use EK's coolingconfigurator.com, that tells you if your GPU is an nVidia reference board or not + the applicable EK blocks. That tool allows you to confirm if you are using a reference design and if so, the court is wide open.

Loop Order:

Does not matter; but make sure your reservoir feeds your pump.

Pumps:

You'll want a pump with a PWM function. I would go for the MCP35x (based on DDC 3.x series.) Unless you have a really low restriction loop, the MCP35x will surpass the D5 (max RPM setting).

My GPU is a GTX 780 Classified, its most deffinatly NOT reference, its huge tongue.gif . As far as i know the only 2 blocks available are the Hydro Copper and EK block.

I been looking at the XSPC D5 Photon 270 Reservoir/Pump Combo which comes with a D5 Vario pump. Good choice ? I did want to stear clear of res/[pump combo's so i could make sure i get the best individual parts, but i really liek the res and the only way to have it fit directly to a pump would be via their combo. I dont really have space to have the tube res and pump seperate.

GPU Waterblock:

That's curious, I would have assumed Swiftech sold a non EVGA branded 780 Classified waterblock like they did with the normal 780/Titan (btw, Swiftech is the OEM for the Hydro Copper waterblock.)

Pump/Res:

A lot of people have had good experiences with the XSPC D5 Photon series. Personally I don't have one, but I do have an XSPC Res Top for my DDC 3.1 and its wonderful. I would trust XSPC either way.

Its not always the case that buying a separate reservoir and pump will yield better results than a combo. The XSPC res top I have actually improves the DDC 3.1 pump performance (by virtue of replacing the stock pump top.)

Combo's work fine and just make sure that your pump is at the lowest point in your loop.

Right ok thanks peeps.

Next question, do any of u know a way to mount the D5 Photon 240 combo from the bottom verticaly ?
I cant find a mount anywhere for it as most use the pump top to mount from. The only way i see u can mount it is using the res bracket, which i cant do becouse i dont have space to mount it to the side of my case. (Check the paint pic) I need it mounted to the bottom of my case.
