Windows 7Pro Freezing randomly on "Starting Windows" Screen [SOLVED]

post #1 of 8

This is brand new installation... of Win 7pro. I'm little baffled that this problem is not consistent. Some times it would hang at the start up screen, Hard shutdown does work "sometime" but only to have the problem show up again.

This is a new PC build I was doing fine up till doing windows update where it aske you to restart.

I'm wondering if I botched some patching? Should I reinstall windows again fresh?

- Used USB DVD drive for windows install if that makes any difference?
- Samsung 840 Pro (I've installed the Magician software and it was showing no issue and latest firmware)
- Currently using the onboard graphics HD 4600 to get me through installation.

Thanks for the assistance.

What motherboard are you using? I've see after doing some updates (OS, driver, BIOS, all of them) that somehow the SATA settings go away from AHCI to something else (i think it goes back to IDE) for whatever reason. This happened with my most recent Gigabyte board a few times after making changes. This will result in a hanging at the boot screen like you've described. However, my hang up was totally consistent. This may be an issue with a janky BIOS. But then again, it may be something else entirely. confused.gif

I would try a fresh reinstall, and check to make sure the SATA controller is in AHCI mode before, and after install.

Hope this helps! And if not, then good luck! Post back with your results when ya get 'em. I'd like to know how this turns out. thumb.gif

Do you have an external hard drive permanently plugged in in one of the USB ports? If you do remove before booting up. Also do the same for any USB storage device.

@SigTauMatt

Using the Asus Z87 Gryphon board, I've check the Bios and its still in AHCI mode.

@grss1982

I was using an external DVD drive for OS/Driver installation, unplugged it and it does still freeze at splash screen randomly.

Currently as far as I can tell It only hang at the "Starting Windows" Screen and no where else, still all random occurrence.

Update: Reinstall didn't work as I thought it was just a stupid mistake on my part. Was able to get all driver installed and restarts all worked perfectly and no freezes until.....

Update #2: It appears that once I've installed the first massive Windows Update the system freezes when trying to restart.

Update #3: Ran the Startup Repair, failed repair AutoFailover, Baddriver message. Is there any way to find out which driver is causing error? (This could be related to update #2, Windows update might have botch a driver update?)

Does the AMDA00 Interface Driver ring any bell for people here? I found it with an error during safe mode. I think this might be whats causing the issue. Using the Mobo CD doesn't do anything and not sure where to get an updated driver...

Go to Start, Run, MSCONFIG.

Configure it like this:

You'll be able to see exactly what is loading when the freeze happens, and go from there.

Hey man,

I think a lot of people have gotten this. Seems to be an update from Windows that bugged a few systems, including my friend's and my mother's pc. Both running Windows 7 pro.
So a system restore and then disable the updates. So far my mother's pc hasn't had any problems after doing that.

Ok sorry for a lack of update as I've sold my old computer. I've randomly stumbled on the solution... The problem was all coming from the network adapter that I've failed to take into account.

Its the Asus AC66 Wireless adapter that is causing the randomly freeze on all Z87 board, once removed and re-installed windows everything worked fine. Talked with my local computer store about exchanging it to a AC68 (which was made because of this issue) because the AC66 was bundle with the Gryphon Motherboard.

Lesson learned, got to stop creating tunnel vision for myself. Was so focused on the driver issue that I've failed to look for any other issue.

Thanks

I thought it could do with the wireless adapter, but I honestly think it's a Windows issue.
I have a tp link wireless adapter, which isn't the same as yours, yet have the same problem as you
