Looking at upgrading my monitor

Thread Starter
I recently built a new rig with the centerpiece being my graphics card, the R9 290X. I currently have 2 older monitors that are both 1080p. I've been spending a lot of time looking around for new monitors, and stumbled upon the Seiki 39" 4K at just under $500 which seems like an unbelievable price. I know that at the 4K resolution it will max out at 30hz, but at 1080p it can do 120hz. Before this I was looking at some Korean 1440p and 1600p displays which were about $150 cheaper but also 12" smaller. I'll be mainly gaming with FPS like BF4 and CoD, and otherwise just web browsing and watching movies. So my question is which would be the best? My budget is around $500 which is why I'm not looking at high end monitors but instead value monitors.

-edit-
I'm not desperate to buy a monitor right now, my debate is between either the Seiki 39" / Korean IPS or just saving my money and waiting what could be another year for 4K monitors to come up supporting HDMI 2.0. I would just like something bigger than the 25" I have now to play games on my computer and the Xbox One I'll be getting Friday.

Well the 39" Seiki isn't really a monitor. It's a TV hence it's size. If you can fit a 39" TV on your desk and sit a comfortable distance away from it, go ahead, but for 99% of people it's not monitor sized.

It's not really that special of a TV either. It can do 4k @ 30hz which is okay for movies and stuff, and 1080p @ 120hz which is not special at all. There are several monitors now that can do 1080p @ 120hz and do it a lot better.

If you really want to get a 4k monitor (like me) then I would wait for like Q2 2014 in hopes that 4k will become a lot more common. Right now 1080p is becoming mainstream, but 4k is still at a pretty enthusiast level. Asus makes a 4k monitor, but for $3500. 4k probably will take a while to become more mainstreamed though, because of the challenge of broadcasting. You are transmitting around 4x the amount of data compared to 1080p

So for now I would recommend just buying a 2560x1440 Korean monitor and wait for 4k prices to decrease. A 27" at 2560x1440 is about 100ppi while a 31.5" 4k is about 130ppi (if I remember correctly) so it's not like an insane boost in quality (but it's still pretty major).

Yea I'm going to go ahead and hold off on buying anything 4K until HDMI 2.0 so I can take full advantage of the bandwidth. I'm going to look into the Korean Monitors and possibly buy 2 to replace the monitors I have now. Thanks for the input smile.gif
