So I'm looking for my first tablet. I want a 7in. and it must be android, no iOs. I've narrowed it down to the three above. It will be used simply for web browsing, reading, and maybe taking notes in class. Which one would be best suited for my needs? Also depending on the tablet I get I will root it so no worries about software.
My conclusion, based on your criteria, is that you should definitely get the Tegra Note.
1. Web Browsing - Winner by a wide margin: Tegra Note.
Benchmarks and real world experience show the Tegra Note is at least 2x faster in web rendering than the N7.2. I have two T4 devices (Shield, Asus TF701T) and they outclass my Nexus 4 by a wide margin.
2. Reading - Winner: Nexus 7.2
Yes, 323PPI beats the Tegra Note's 216PPI, and the screen is beautiful. But - it sucks power, and as a result the N7.2 is pretty comparable to the Tegra Note in battery tests according to Anand and Tom's hardware.
3. Note taking - Winner by a wide margin: Tegra Note
The T4 processor is used for touch input, resulting in a 300Hz samples, which is 5-10x the sample rate of an active digitizer, and results in fantastic responsiveness. While the reviews of the Tegra Note vary from 'it's ok' to 'fantastic!', everyone agrees it's stylus is very, very good, with lower latency that the Samsung Note 8.
4.Performance Winner by a wide margin: Tegra Note
. Expect 2-3x the framerate of the N7.2 thanks to lower DPI and a more powerful GPU. If you do anything 3D, this thing is going to blow the doors off the N7.2 -- and the Samsung Note 8 (and it is half the price).
5. Expandsion Winner over N7.2 by a wide margin: Tegra Note
. MicroSD Card allows cheap expansion to 80GB for about $27 (SanDisk, class 10). MicroHDMI provides ability to attach to a 1080p screen to display games. I expect the nVidia Shield capabilities will carry over, which means the ability to move entire applications and data to the SD card, and console mode which will provide 1080p native resolution on external displays. The N7.2 offers none of this.
6. Software Updates Winner N7.2
The N7.2 will always get faster updates. But, nVidia has made a major commitment to Android and has been releasing excellent updates to the Shield about once a month, and it is now on 4.3, plus extra features stock android does not allow (like move to SD card!). Asus (non-nexus) has the worst record for updates of the three. And I own multiple Asus devices
If you do buy the Tegra Note, I recommend you get the smart cover. I did this with my N7.1, and the tablet is pristine.
Hope that helps!Edited by deppman - 11/20/13 at 3:25pm
