Suggestions for learning Java

I am a CS major but don't have much experience with Java, since break is coming up I'd like to use that time to improve my skills. Can anyone recommend a good book or online tutorial? It's for an Algorithms class.

A great book is Deitel P.J., Deitel H.M. - Java How to Program 9th Edition. it comes with alot of exorcises and code templates I found it to be the best programming book I have used.

Wait, your algorithms class is using Java? I'm surprised because my Algorithms teach wouldn't touch Java with a 10ft pole because of how slow it is compared to C/C++.

Also, that book is pretty decent but you may be better off just going to uva.onlinejudge.org and looking up examples online of how to do it. That helped me learn quite a bit about different languages.

Well Robert Sedgewick might take issue with this. His fourth edition of Algorithms is in Java (I have both the C and C++ editions) so go figure.

I mean there's nothing wrong with learning it in Java, but actually implementing algorithms that are performance reliant in Java is a bad idea imo. You'll be doing so much extra work to get it even close to the performance of mediocre C/C++ code. For instance one assignment I remember doing we had to do in C++ or Java. I did it in Java and my roommate did it in C++ to see the performance difference. Our code was almost identical and mine ran in .9 seconds while his ran in .2 seconds. Now, I know C++ isn't really 5 times faster, but there is a decent penalty hit for using it.
