here's the fstab:
# /etc/fstab: static file system information.
#
# <file system> <mount point> <type> <options> <dump> <pass>
proc /proc proc defaults 0 0
# /dev/sda1
UUID=4d982968-fb91-45dd-8101-5b338b4861dd / ext3 defaults,errors=remount-ro 0 1
# /dev/sda5
UUID=c04118e0-62bd-4d72-a2ff-91ecc7043a72 none swap sw 0 0
/dev/hda /media/cdrom0 udf,iso9660 user,noauto 0 0
/dev/ /media/floppy0 auto rw,user,noauto 0 0

shouldn't that read as /media/dvd?

no, how ever i had trouble trouble when it read the sata partitons w/ those numbers this might be why ubuntu isn't stable [it isn't using the swap or something] but the drive is fine
all drive in linux should be read according to there block devices
ie hd* and sd*, any thing else wiil cause trouble or limit preformance
ie if it read "/dev/cdrom" it would not wright cd [or possibily read dvds]
as for the numbers well see if this fstab works

ok, i tried that fstab. dvd played, but it was still really jerky. now i have another problem. the user is locking up again. luckily, i have a backup user and it allows that user to sign in. the only difference between the users is how the desktop is setup (pannels, background, theme (stock theme). here's what's in the error log:
E [02/Jan/2007:20:43:28 -0500] Creating missing directory "/var/run/cups/certs"
E [02/Jan/2007:20:48:55 -0500] Creating missing directory "/var/run/cups/certs"
E [02/Jan/2007:20:51:19 -0500] Creating missing directory "/var/run/cups/certs"

this was obviously the 3 attempts i made at trying to login to the user that's locked.
