GTX 770 or AMD 290

Thread Starter
Hey guys, I'm in a bit of a situation. I need a graphics card. I have a few idea's. Which are those 2 cards in the title. Kinda have a budget. Like around $350 to $400. The 770 is cheaper and would probably do fine mostly. Though I've heard a lot of good things about the 290. I know the 290 is better. Though I've never really been a fan of AMD and I've heard the drivers suck. But I don't know lol. Most people tell me to stick with Nvidia and considering my budget get the 770. Though If the 290 is good and worth it I would much rather get it.

You sound like you answered your own question in favor of the 290 lol. You can either wait for non ref cards if heat and noise bother you, or just spring for it now.

R9 290 No question. The 770 is probably the worst value in GPU's right now

Even people from the green team will tell you to get the 290, it competes with the titan lol. It's on another level entirely from the 770.

That being said, it runs far too hot and too loud for most people, so either wait until December for non-ref cards or bite the bullet and get the 770 - which is still a very fast card.

I'm shocked at this late point in the game, that people don't simply use the search feature.

The 290 is substantially faster than the GTX 770 in every benchmark, it's more directly competing with the GTX 780 and GTX Titan. The 770 is a leftover GTX 680 with a higher clock speed, faster RAM, and a firmware update showing a new model number.

Driver issues are mostly a moot point if you're only running a single video card. Most of the "problems" with the AMD drivers show their ugly side with Crossfire and specific gaming titles, not necessarily a bad driver on the whole. NVidia has had their share of crappy driver releases over the last couple of years as well.

OP the R9 290 is a no brainer. if you want a quiet card wait for the asus r9 290 dcii top or his r9 290 iceq x2 to launch in 2nd week of Dec. the stock cooler is moderately loud till 55% fan speed and can easily handle 1 Ghz clocks.
