Turn your $60 router into a $600 router - Page 10

post #91 of 141
Well.
216Mhz = Load average 21-23%
228Mhz = Load average 14-16%

Nothing else changed. =\\

And me and my sister are the only ones under 40 in our neighborhood, and I'm the only one that knows what a router IS.

Middle of nowhere. >_>

Anywho, I have mine OCed to 216Mhz, and I know it helps performance, but what does it really help out? Distance?
wifi signal strength would help distance, not overclocking the router. The reason overclocking is an option is because WRT has so many features that it can really make your throughput take a hit. After flashing my WRT54GL I actually lost a significant amount of speed. Went from 13 mbps down with Linksys's firmware to 5-6 mbps with the dd-WRT default. I ended up disabling a bunch of stuff and overclocking my router to 250 mhz to get speed above 10mbps again. I'm still not sure if it's going as fast as it was before I flashed it but I can live with what I have as a tradeoff for the increased wifi range.

IMO unless you actually have a use for all the additional features it's really not worth flashing the router due to the potential loss of speed.

And you're sure your router's serial begins with CDFA?

What exactly is the problem? Does the upgrade page say failed installation? Does the router simply stop responding? Be as specific as possible.

The real world gains from overclocking aren't that noticeable. My chip is at 216 mhz as well. When I go to replace this router, maybe I'll try 300 mhz and see what happens. Overclocking may help with signal strength and such but it's nothing major.
Ooh.
I meant the Web Access Gui, for accessing the router settings. Not open wifi connection lol.

So yea, I have WEP because my PSP doesn't work with WPA.

The post of mine you just quoted was actually directed at Pook.

As for our original conversation, I was also referring to the Web Access GUI as well.

Restricting wireless access to the Web Access GUI is a precaution so that it cannot be taken over or modified by someone who hacks into your network.

Generally I do the "take over network" thing.

But I'll be ready for an I-told-you-so if anything ever happens.

You better be.

I do a site survey with my router every couple of days. It's hilarious to see how many new networks pop up.

Anytime I visit my friends on the other side of the city, my laptop comes with me. I either have fun playing online through someone else's internet connection or I end up with a nice new collection of files.

Doesn't look like you need to know any "linux sauce"

It is just a firmware hack.

Still good! rep +
