Optimal flowrate

Thread Starter
What is the preferred flowrate in a WC-loop? And how low can you go when idleing and not loose to much performance due to the lowered flowrate?

Here's a really non-committal answer: It depends.

There's a bunch of variables in play when you consider the flow rate's net effect: radiator performance (heat transfer, restriction) curves, number of radiators, water block performance curves, number of waterblocks, pump performance etc. Not to mention what your personal comfort level is: fan noise, idle temperatures, etc.

Here's a decent explanation of the effect of flow rate without going into too much thermodynamics:
Code:
http://martinsliquidlab.i4memory.com/MartinsFlowRateEstimator.html

If I had to give an absolute minimum, it would be around 1 US Gal/min or around 4 Litres/min.

I get acceptable CPU temps with a flow rate of 0.3gpm (1.2lpm) although that's about as low as my flow meter will read. With that flow rate a pair of 580GTX are hitting around 35-40ÂșC above ambient though, still within specification but a bit high for me.

A lot depends on the components in the loop though.
