What's the situation with fixing Skyrim saves these days?

Last time I was playing Skyrim, I had just gotten the 2 main dlc's. I got to a certain quest where I had to enter a cave, but the cave would never load and I was stuck on the loading screen forever basically. I know that there was an experimental feature with SKSE at the time, and a couple of other tools around on the nexus. But I tried these methods out, yet could never get this cave to load (Skyrim had already received the final patch at the time as well + plus I tried using the latest community patches at the time). I'm pretty sure it was because of my save file.

Just wondering if anyone knows if that stuff has improved now, and what the best tools are for the job of rescuing a save that has been wrecked with installing and removing mods? Thanks.

There's a newish SKSE plugin called SafetyLoad that you could try. As long as you don't have conflicting mods causing the issue and/or SKSE plugins which clash with SafetyLoad (I only know of one that does) it will fix the ILS, or CTD if it is unfixable.
