[Build Log] OUROBOROS : Corsair 540 Air Water Cooling Adventures

Hi guys,

My first attempt at a custom water cooling loop and serious modding...so I might as well record the process.biggrin.gif

I had several ideas on how I could attempt to do water cooling in the 540 Air, but I settled on trying to fit as many rads inside the case as I could whilst running slow RPM fans. As mentioned this build will be in the Corsair 540 Air with a black and white colour scheme. I want to fill the 540 as much as possible so, love it or hate it, I won't be using straight 'routes' for the tubing but rather long arcs. I also upped the budget on this build in order for it to last me a while.

The build will be called the ouroboros, a symbol of alchemy and symbolises self-reflexivity and cyclicality. Kinda like a water cooling loop tongue.gif

Also as I am in Australia, the availability of water cooling parts is scarce to say the least (one online store), and as I did not want to ship parts from the US or elsewhere, my selection of parts will be limited.

I previously had a build in the 540 with a H100i cooler, but I forgot to take pics before ripping it apart so yeh...

MSI Z77 Mpower
Intel i7 2600k (I like it, and managed to get it stable at 5.2 on a H100i)

(2) AMD R9 290
(2) WD 2Tb Black

Week 1

Case Modding

In order to fit the bottom 240mm radiator, the bottom hot swap hard drive mounts needed to be removed to add extra clearance, especially with two graphics cards. I'm planning on laying a laser cut acrylic piece over the hole with fan hole mounts for the rads.
Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

I went through 4 dremel cutting bits to cut the steel plate!!! thumb.gif

Radiator/Graphics Card Fitting

After extensive measruing, two rads were ordered to do a test fit in the 540; an Alphacool UT60 360mm White, and a XT45 240mm rad. Ohh yeh...my 2 brand spankin new R9 290s also arrived... So there was also that
Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

As you can see the rads are a very tight fit, not to mention the fans that would go over the top of them. The bottom graphics card is also extremely close to the bottom rad but a water block over the bottom card would increase the thickness...barely.

More to come next week!!! Or when I get new stuff...biggrin.gif

Would the name come from FMA by any chance?
Are you watercooling the 290s?

XFX R9 290s, which will both be put underwater. The XFX cause there has been success with flashing with the 290x bios and it was the cheapest I could get my hands on.

And, yes, the ouroboros can be found in FMA tongue.gif

Week 1 (Part 2)

Carbon Fibre Vinyl

As a nice extra touch, I decided to line the inside of the case with a carbon fibre vinyl. It just adds an extra subtle touch that IMO looks fricken sick!! tongue.gif
Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

More Fitting/Adjusting

So more fitting and adjusting...just to make sure.

Ouroboros was on the cover of The Neverending Story, way before FMA! FMA rocks though.

Week 1 Part 3

GPU Burn In

So I set up a ghetto test bench to make sure that both GPUs worked and so I could get some stuff off of my hard drive.
Some glamour shots :D (Click to show)

The cards look gorgeous but are noisy as feck and gets hot to touch, even on the plastic shroud. Not that that should be a problem since I'm putting both under water.

Waterblocks and the rest of the water cooling parts should be arriving this week....minus the fittings.

nice subtle touch of the carbon fiber, its not too much but still a noticeable addition. thumb.gif

Week 3

Everything Else...mostly

Sorry for taking my time...but I've been quite busy lately and haven't had much free time. All my other components arrived on Monday afternoon and I've been tinkering ever since.
Parts...YAY!! (Click to show)

The EK waterblocks turned out really nice. I had a brain fart for a moment and took 30 minutes to figure out that you needed to remove the GPU brace/bracket to take the whole heatsink off...tongue.gif. The back plate helps gives the cards a clean look.
GPUs!!! (Click to show)

I know that watercooling RAM is absolutely useless but what the heck... I used the Alphacool waterblock meant for Dominator series RAM but with XSPC kits for my Vengeance the holes fit perfectly..was pretty amazed. biggrin.gif
Useless RAM FTW!! (Click to show)

Pictures to come soon...lost them

The EK CPU waterblock was alot larger than I expected but still looks pretty sweet.
Smexy CPU (Click to show)

The Noiseblocker fans are awesome. The colour scheme matches perfectly with my build and its virtually silent. The rads also look nice especially the White Edition, however I'm still trying to see how I can fit tubing in.
