How bad is the Galaxy Mega?

Hi All

We just brought a Mazda Atenza Wagon in from Japan, now the Navi screen is in Japanese and I am thinking about ripping it out and replacing with a android tablet.

Hopefully the Google Nexus 7 will fit in the special compartment. But it will be tight, so I'm thinking about the next biggest thing which as far as I can tell is a Samsung Galaxy Mega phone.

But I have heard they are terrible? So just how bad are they? Will it serve as a car computer? I'll mainly be running Google Navigation, Music, Emails etc through it, perhaps the odd video.

Also on a side note, is it possible to plug a usb memory stick into the miniusb port of Android tablets/phones, to copy across files?

This isn't a biggy as I'm sure I could just park it up close to my WIFI modem and copy across the wifi network.

Cheers

First off, I'd like to say this is a great idea, one I've never heard of, if this is your original idea, kudos to you.

Now... the Galaxy Mega...

The Galaxy Mega is an oversized Galaxy S4, which sounds like the Note 3 but it's not the Note 3...

The Galaxy Mega has a 720p screen and I believe there are 2 versions of the phone, one of which is 5.8 and the other one is 6.3 inches.... Now, the Galaxy s4, which is 5 inches, has the full 1080p option... Since it seems your going to be distancing yourself from the phone, this might not be much of a concern to you, if anything a benefit, because this is one of the key points of the phone that lowers its cost from the Note 3.

Next is the specs, but like I said, the Mega is almost perfect for you, because you don't have overpowered specs that drive up the price like in the S4 and the Note3.... The mega has a 1.7 dual core opposed to the Quad in the S4, 1.5GB of ram in the Mega, opposed to the 2gb in the S4... and last but not least, the camera.... The Mega has the 8mp camera were as the S4 has the 13mp camera

My opinion, get the Mega. You're not going to be playing crazy HD games that require the high specs, you're not going to be doing too much multitasking, I assume maybe Music, Maps... maybe email etc...? How much can you do in the car, especially while you drive.... So you just don't need the specs...

The screen resolution is kind of a big deal for those enthusiasts, but this is for your car... You're going to be having it in your dash... your going to be 1-2 feet away from the screen... You're not going to notice the pixels, and besides 720p is still a good resolution... It's just that it's a HUGE phone, so up to your face might be a problem, but 1-2 feet away, you'll be absolutely fine.

The camera you will obviously not need so that doesn't even matter, just another benefit for you because it keeps the cost low....

So, you'll be saving huge money from the comparable Note 3.... Stick with the Mega...

Lastly, very interested in this, you should totally do a build log!

Good luck

Edit: I didn't read the last part of your post, I highly suggest you take advantage of Google Music to sync your music with your PC, and take full advantage of Cloud services such as Google Drive, Dropbox, etc...

Yes, a USB OTG adapter is needed to plug a USB device in, but these go from £1 or $1 on eBay, so thats a option

Thanks for the reply, so it is a viable option, I heard it was terrible but for my use doesn't sound that bad.

That is of course if the Google Nexus 7 doesn't fit which hopefully it does since its the same price as the galaxy mega and much much better.

Yeah haha well I've seen all the screen head units you can buy now a days and I've always thought why not just a tablet, they are much more powerful and can do lots of things. Surely someone else has done this before me though.

I am going to get a professional outfit to install it, hopefully so its full integrated into the automatic compartment. I don't want to have to plug it in and out, I'm hoping I could somehow turn it on when the car starts (but this might be a stretch)

Check this answer: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/17160655/turning-on-a-mobile-phone-sgs2-automatically-remotely

You will need to wire the phone into the USB lighter of your car, easily with USB or with good soldering skills, then root your phone and do the above, whenever the engine is switched on, it will turn the phone on, but you might need to shut it down manually
