Bought a Kinect-less Xbox One a few days ago, along with 4 games that came with it. Forza 5, Forza Horizon 2, Destiny, and Assasin's Creed: Black Flag. All for $549 AUD.

Turning on the Xbone and going through the setup process was fine, until I had to update it. About a minute into the update, it started producing a loud coil whine. This is apparent whenever I'm on the dashboard, or in any apps.

After reading through numerous threads, it was apparent that the October update fixed the coil whine, but it has seemed to do the opposite for me.

Does anyone have anything to add to help me out?

EDIT: Coil whine is also occuring when the console if turned off, and still plugged in.

October update is only available to preview program members right now as far as I know, so if that's what fixes it, it would explain why it didn't work for you.

Edit: Other than that, I believe I read that Microsoft replaces Xbones that have coil whine.

That's an overstatement, of course; even though I know what you meant to say, even if others here did not (that discs provide no additional reliability compared to digital). The reality is that each format has its different pros and cons. In addition to resale, discs offer (or at least they should offer) a smaller mandatory install than a disc, which is a boon for people with large game collections (a 500GB drive is not that much when a digital game consumes 25GB!) But the transportability of digital is an obvious benefit that discs cannot replicate (broken disc = game over).

And if extra couple of $$$ from reselling the game really matter to you - maybe you should find a better job or (if you're unable to work due to disability) save on something else or don't waste your money on games in first place wink.gif They are not an "investment", they are just a temporary, disposable source of entertainment.

Telling someone to "get a better job" is a sure path to having your arguments ignored. You may as well have called him a Nazi, a lot of people probably started thinking you were an idiot the moment you said that.

But the true nugget if wisdom here is that, as much as the game devs bemoan this argument, paying full price for most new games at release is just stupid. That's why they hype their games up so much, to make you think that if you aren't playing on day one you're just missing out on the Event of the Year. Pssh. That game will be the same game in a year, when it will be half price on Steam. And it will still be the same in two years, when it will be under $10 in the Summer Sale. People on a budget just need to tune out the advertising hype and go buy games that are a bit older but still fantastic.

(Naturally, the exception here is multiplayer FPS. Unfortunately the communities are fickle, and there may be few to no players in two years. I would still advocate avoiding day one hype and waiting for the first sale price, but you probably need to jump on within the first year to get full enjoyment out of this genre.)

I used to be like you, but I got over it. That really is "old man" sentiment (and I am an old man for the record, so that's not meant as a slight). Do you *have* to hold a DVD in your hand, or are you content to watch Netflix? Do you *have* to hold a paper book, or do you use an e-reader? It's all the same thing...eventually you will catch up on the gaming thing, I suspect. Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

Never? Luckiest gamer on earth, I wager. I've been gaming for 34 years...it happens. I've had cartridges, floppy disks, and optical discs all get damaged or fail for other non-obvious reasons. Of course it's not common, I'm not implying that...but it's going to happen sooner or later!

I guess I should also clarify that I don't like to buy digital console games myself, for the storage reasons I mentioned before and for the resale reasons you specify. Eventually I will sell the console, and having the games with it will increase the resale. I do buy digital DLC however, and I use my Bing search points on XBL $3 credits that I apply towards games (but I don't consider that spending money really). But on PC, I am exclusively digital now...I buy them on sale from Steam, as mentioned. And even if I bought new, the resale value of a PC game plummets so fast because of Steam that there is little reason to keep that physical copy.

You've never had a drive die on you? You really are the luckiest person on earth.

I still don't have a cap through Time Warner, but reality is that an occasional game download is not going to impact your cap as much as streaming media will. Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

This is very true, we were "promised" lower prices. But it doesn't (and didn't) take a business genius to smell out the lie, or to understand why: the brick and mortar retailers would cry foul for being unfair competition, it would "put them out of business". Fair or not, the distributors need their retail channel, so they can't alienate them; plus they get to keep the higher margins of the digital download. In short, prices never come down just because of an efficiency; efficiencies always lead to higher margins. Prices only come down as a result of competitive pressure or a devaluation of the product, neither of which is created via digital downloads.
i agree with most of what you said

as to the response to me, again i point at this, look at xbox, now granted you couldnt DL full games iirc but DLC you could, what can you do for that now ? also again looking at xbox since XBL is dead what happens if your system dies, i could find another where as hypothetically speaking if you could DL games, this person would be screwed again it probably wont matter to a non collector

here is a very small section of my collection, my rarer sega stuffs, in bulk

some of this stuff is completely unopened
others just hard to find
( looking at you extender for sega cd and rf shields @ 32x/segacd yes that sega/sega cd/ 32x is 100% complete and all authentic cables ect !@! )
as to the second statement or had a console die !

which is becoming more and more common

Luckiest? No just a responsible person who takes care of his belongings. As for hard drive, ive never had a hard drive of a game console go out. I have had numerous 360's die(over 10) ive had multiple isp's. Comcast(employee account so no cap, but now they have caps), cable one, time warner, frontier and charter and the only.one who dosnt have a cap is frontier but thats because im on there 3mb plan so they dont put a cap because of the slow speeds. Comcast, the nations largest isp is capping most with plans to cap all customers by the end of 2015. I use 30gb a month on frontier gaming and streaming. Comcast cap is 250gb and when i was an employee i hit 750gb almost all months i was employed there. Caps are coming(not that i want that at all). Now im not a normal customer. When i was working i was going through xboxes, new computers(my steam hard drive is over 800gb's) and was working on employees computers...

Not at all, i thought that is what we were doing was having a conversation about our views on the subject. Just because i dont share your views dosnt mean we cant discuss it anymore. Im also trying to back up my views with personal facts as to why i view things the way i do. Ive agreed with people on some things but differ on others. For me, having discs is a smarter choice due to having consoles die and not wanting to download 24+ hours for just one game. And sarcasm dosnt help your point, it only hurts it. No, in all my years console gaming i have never lost or damaged a game. I have never had a console.hard drive die. I have had 6 rrod and 4 straight consoles that had video issues that MS just.could not fix(green tint to my games after 15 mins of play).

Master Chief Collection and Sunset Overdrive seems like they will truly boost Xbone sales. They have nice exclusives so far. In this 1 year period I would even say they top over PS4 in exclusives (so far)

Bummer you got to wait so long, I got my Master Chief Collection on pre-order, it's an easy buy for me because I already love games so it's not one of those 'will it be good or not' pre-orders
